The quarterfinals at the 2026 Rolex ATP Paris Masters have shaped up into a genuinely interesting set of matches. There is real variety here, from wildcard stories to high-stakes American rivalries and the small matter of Carlos Alcaraz chasing a first Paris title. Here is how I see each match playing out.

Rinky Hijikata vs Luca Van Assche

These two have never met before, which makes this one harder to call, but the context around both players tells a decent story. Hijikata has been absolutely brilliant this week. Knocking out Novak Djokovic, a seven-time champion at this event, was a massive result, and he followed it up by coming from behind to beat Etcheverry in the next round. That kind of back-to-back resilience is not a fluke, it is a player who knows how to find another gear when it matters.

Van Assche has been the darling of the Paris crowd this week, and fairly so. The French wildcard beating Lorenzo Musetti in three sets to reach his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal is a terrific achievement. The home support will be deafening for him. Even so, I keep coming back to the fact that Hijikata has looked genuinely dangerous in the clutch moments throughout this tournament, and I do not think Van Assche is quite ready to handle that yet at this level.

PredictionHijikata wins in three sets

Casper Ruud vs Nuno Borges

Ruud comes into this having swept aside Jan-Lennard Struff in a convincing fashion in the third round. Indoor hard courts are not exactly where Ruud is most comfortable, but he has been playing some of his best tennis of the season and you get the sense he genuinely fancies his chances of going deep in a relatively open half of the draw. This is his second quarterfinal appearance at Paris and he will know the conditions well enough by now.

Borges deserves enormous credit. Coming in as a lucky loser and reaching the quarterfinal without being broken once across three main draw matches is a remarkable achievement and shows real mental solidity. The head to head is level at two wins apiece, and Borges actually beat Ruud recently in Basel, so there is recent form pointing his way. Ruud will not have forgotten that loss in a hurry though, and that extra motivation could make a real difference here. I think Ruud edges it, but Borges will make him work.

PredictionRuud wins in three sets

Ben Shelton vs Tommy Paul

The head to head is locked at two wins each, so there is genuine parity on paper between these two Americans. Shelton got through his third round match against Rinderknech but it was not straightforward. He had to come back from a set down and eventually won in a third set tiebreak. Rinderknech’s first serve caused him real problems, and if Shelton is struggling to break serve against that level of opponent, it raises questions heading into this one.

Paul has simply been one of the best players on the indoor hard court swing this autumn. His return game is sharp, his movement is excellent, and he has that ability to chip returns and create awkward angles that can really disrupt bigger servers. That is a potential problem for Shelton, who relies heavily on holding comfortably and breaking when opportunities arise. If Paul is neutralising the serve and keeping the rallies competitive, I think the edge goes to the lower-ranked American in this pairing.

PredictionPaul wins in three sets

Carlos Alcaraz vs Taylor Fritz

Alcaraz received a walkover in his last match after Matteo Berrettini pulled out with an arm injury, which means the Spaniard arrives at the quarterfinal with fresher legs than most of his rivals. He had looked sharp in his opening match before that, and coming into this event he is the standout favourite for the title. A first Paris Masters crown would mean a great deal to him and you can tell from how he has carried himself this week that he is focused on making it happen.

Fritz has won just one match against Alcaraz across their seven meetings, which is a brutal head to head record to carry into any match. That said, the conditions here do at least give him a theoretical pathway. Fast indoor courts suit his serve and his flat ball striking, and if he can serve at an elite level throughout, he will get his chances. The problem is that Alcaraz has shown repeatedly that even when opponents play well, he finds ways to win. The head to head weight alone gives Carlos a significant mental advantage walking onto court.
