Seattle Sounders
Los Angeles FCSeattle Sounders have won just one of their last eight matches, and that one result feels like a long time ago now. Five games without a win heading into the final day of the regular season, capped off by a truly awful 5-1 hammering at Vancouver last weekend. That is not the form of a side ready to extend their season. And yet here they are, still alive, still needing this, with everything on the line at Lumen Field.
Los Angeles FC arrive in Washington having already punched their playoff ticket, but their own form has been a mess since the summer. Twelve wins from fourteen since August? No. Twelve games without a win from fourteen. There is a huge difference, and it tells you everything about where both of these sides are right now heading into what could be a strange, difficult game to read.
This Western Conference regular season finale takes place at Lumen Field in Seattle, with the hosts needing maximum points to keep their playoff hopes breathing. The stakes could not be much higher for the home side, while LAFC come in with their spot already secured and very little riding on the outcome beyond a matter of pride and momentum.
Brian Schmetzer has some genuine headaches through the spine of his squad, and that is the last thing he needs going into a must-win fixture. LAFC are also not without their own issues, so both benches will be stretched.
Schmetzer does not have many options for rotation given the injury list, so expect him to put out what is essentially his strongest available side. Jordan Morris will be crucial going forward, and Adam Rusnak needs to be the creative force in behind. The back four will have to be much more organised than it was at Vancouver, where they were torn apart.
Xavier Tamarit will likely keep faith with the shape that has served LAFC reasonably well this season, even if results have dried up. Denis Bouanga leads the line and remains the man most likely to do damage on the break. Hugo Lloris will start in goal, with Porteous and Tafari likely to anchor the centre of defence following Long’s withdrawal.
That 5-1 defeat at Vancouver was a proper wake-up call for Seattle, but whether they have the squad or the mentality to respond is a genuine question. Brian White, Ryan Gauld and Aleksa Cvetkovic all got on the scoresheet for the Whitecaps in a game that was done and dusted by half time. Jordan Morris pulled one back but it was barely a footnote. Five games without a win, two draws and three defeats. That is not a team peaking at the right moment.
The concerning thing for Sounders fans is that this run followed four straight victories between late September and mid-October, so there was a moment where things looked promising. That momentum has completely evaporated, and the confidence in this side looks shot. Standing tenth in the Western Conference, one point behind seventh-placed LA Galaxy and two ahead of Minnesota in twelfth, the mathematics are tight. Win and they give themselves a real chance. Drop points and the season is almost certainly over.
LAFC have problems of their own. That 3-1 loss to Minnesota last Monday was their fifth defeat since September, and Joaquin Pereyra absolutely ran the show against them. Since their Leagues Cup involvement in August, they have failed to win twelve of fourteen league outings. Only home wins against New York Red Bulls and Austin FC to show from that run. Away from home they have been even worse, without a win in seven road games since they beat LA Galaxy 3-0 back in July. That travel record is worth noting given they are the away side here.
This is where things get really uncomfortable for Seattle. LAFC have won eight of the ten meetings between these two sides since June 2023. That is a remarkable head-to-head record, and it suggests that whatever the form guide says, there is something about facing Los Angeles that Seattle just cannot handle. The psychological weight of that record should not be underestimated, particularly for a home side that is already carrying the pressure of a must-win situation.
The historical matchup heavily favours the visitors, and even if LAFC have little to play for in terms of their own standing, players with playoff experience like Bouanga and Lloris will not want to rock up and lose at a rivals ground. Pride and rhythm ahead of the postseason are real motivating factors.
This game sets up in a genuinely awkward way. Seattle have every incentive in the world to perform, but their form is a mess and they are missing key players. LAFC do not need anything from this game but have been diabolical on the road. The pressure is on the home side, but the head-to-head record keeps pulling you back toward the visitors. Here is how the markets look to me.
With Seattle desperately needing the points, expect intensity and frustration in equal measure from the home side. These two do not particularly shy away from physical battles, and a game with this much at stake for one side usually produces a healthy card count. Back over three and a half cards for this one.
A narrow home win feels like the right call given the stakes and Seattle’s need to attack from the off, but I cannot shake that head-to-head record. LAFC nicking a goal on the break against a stretched Sounders back four is a real possibility. I am going 2-1 to Seattle, a nervy home win with LAFC keeping themselves in it until the end.
Seattle will be pushing hard for goals and committing bodies forward throughout. LAFC tend to absorb pressure and counter, which should result in sustained pressure from the home side. Expect a decent corner count in this one, with over nine corners looking like a reasonable line to target.
Jordan Morris is the standout pick here. He has been one of the brighter spots in a difficult run for the Sounders, he grabbed a goal even in that horror show at Vancouver, and in a game where Seattle will push forward with real urgency from the first whistle, Morris is the man most likely to get on the end of chances early.
Both teams have defensive absences, Seattle need to score and LAFC have shown they can grab goals themselves when given space on the counter. The conditions point toward an open game with mistakes at both ends. Over two and a half goals feels well-suited to this fixture.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| First Goalscorer | Jordan Morris |
| Over/Under Goals | Over 2.5 Goals |
| Both Teams to Score | Yes |
Morris opening the scoring in a game that sees both sides find the net fits neatly with the pressure on Seattle and LAFC’s threat on the break.
Everything about Seattle’s situation demands a reaction. The Sounders know that anything other than three points effectively ends their season, and Lumen Field can be a genuinely hostile environment when the crowd is behind the team. Schmetzer will have his players wound up for this, and that intensity should tell in the opening stages.
But LAFC’s head-to-head dominance over Seattle in recent years is a stubborn fact, and even a comfortable side coasting into the playoffs can cause damage when they have players of the quality of Bouanga and Son. I think Seattle edge it, the home crowd and the desperation factor proving just enough, but LAFC will make them sweat. Final prediction: Seattle Sounders 2-1 Los Angeles FC.
