Who do you think will win?

The FA Cup first round has a habit of throwing up ties that look straightforward on paper but end up being anything but, and this one fits that description perfectly. Crewe Alexandra sit in League Two, AFC Wimbledon are in League One, so by the logic of league position the Dons should be favourites. But football is not played on a spreadsheet, and when you dig into the form of both sides heading into this one, the picture looks very different from what the divisional gap might suggest. This is a fixture where momentum, home advantage and genuine confidence all point in one direction, and that makes it a genuinely interesting watch for any neutral.

Lee Bell has built something solid at Crewe this season, a team that is hard to beat and difficult to play against, with a home record that opposition managers will not be taking lightly. Set against that, Johnnie Jackson is walking into Cheshire with a squad that has not won in eight attempts across all competitions. Something has to give, and working out exactly what gives you a real edge in the market.

Crewe Alexandra vs AFC Wimbledon Match Details

This FA Cup first round tie takes place at the Mornflake Stadium in Crewe, with the winners progressing into the second round. Crewe are playing at home in a competition they last reached the second round of back in the 2023 to 2024 season, so there is genuine incentive for Bell and his squad to get this done and move on. For Wimbledon, a cup run is probably the last thing on their minds given the league struggles, but a positive result here could do wonders for a dressing room that badly needs a lift.

Team News

Crewe are in decent shape squad wise, with a couple of pieces of good news heading into this one. Wimbledon carry a heavier injury burden and it shows in their attacking options.

  • James Jones has returned to Crewe on a short term contract until January, bringing experience and quality to the midfield. He was part of the squad that won promotion back in 2020 and arrives having been playing for Burton Albion most recently.
  • Jordan Gibson is fully fit and in outstanding form, scoring five goals in his last seven appearances. He will be central to Crewe’s attacking plans.
  • Mathew Stevens remains sidelined for AFC Wimbledon with a hamstring problem that has kept him out since March. The striker has contributed 26 league goals for the Dons over the past two seasons, so his absence is a massive blow to their attacking threat.
  • Dujuan Richards has also been out since late September with an injury, leaving Wimbledon short of forward options.
  • Harry Cornick and Jayden Stockley are expected to lead the line for the visitors in the absence of their two injured strikers.

Predicted Lineups

Bell looks set to go with a shape that has served him well at home, with Gibson playing a key role in the number ten area given his current run of form. Jones may come into midfield alongside Holicek as Bell looks to control the game through the middle. McNeill leads the line with March and Tabiner offering wide support.

Crewe expected XI: Lawlor; Hutchinson, Stephenson, Offord, Billington; Thomas, Holicek; Gibson, Tabiner, March; McNeill

Jackson faces a trickier selection puzzle given his injury issues up front. With Stevens and Richards both unavailable, Cornick and Stockley must carry the attacking load, and there is not much cover behind them. The back line looks compact enough but the question is whether Wimbledon have the firepower to hurt a solid Crewe defence.

AFC Wimbledon expected XI: Bursik; Sasu, Seddon, Johnson, Yiadom, Tilley; Hippolyte, Harrison, Smith; Cornick, Stockley

Recent Form

Crewe’s form over the last three games has been a concern, there is no getting away from that. A 2-0 defeat at Exeter was bad enough, but the 5-1 hammering at Chesterfield was alarming for a side that had been so defensively resolute. Bell steadied the ship slightly with a 1-1 draw against Barnet at home, but the Railwaymen will know that performance was not good enough either. The key thing to hold onto, though, is that home record. Across all competitions this season Crewe have not lost at the Mornflake Stadium, winning five of their nine home fixtures. That is a real foundation to build on.

AFC Wimbledon’s recent form is genuinely difficult to look at. Six defeats in their last seven games across all competitions, with four of those coming in League One, leaves them sitting 18th in the third tier and very much in a relegation scrap. Their last win came all the way back in mid September against Doncaster Rovers, a narrow 1-0 success that now feels like a lifetime ago. Most recently they were beaten 2-1 by Stockport, surrendering a lead they had built in the final 25 minutes. That kind of result sticks with a squad mentally, and Jackson will need to find a way to lift spirits before his side travel north.

The contrast in momentum is stark. Crewe are wobbling but have a secure home base. Wimbledon are in freefall and have nothing in terms of recent confidence to draw on. In a one off cup tie, that psychological gap can be every bit as important as quality on the pitch.

Head-to-Head Record

These two clubs have not met since February 2025, so there is a reasonable gap in the head to head record to work with. The most recent meeting did go Wimbledon’s way, and comfortably too, with the Dons running out 3-0 winners. That will give Jackson’s squad a flicker of belief heading into this one, and it is a result worth acknowledging.

That said, one result from over a year ago tells you very little about two squads that have changed considerably since then. Wimbledon’s current attacking options bear no resemblance to what they had available in that fixture given the injury situation. Home advantage on a compact ground in Crewe, against a side this low on confidence, feels like the more relevant factor heading into Saturday.

Key Stats

  • Crewe are unbeaten at home across all competitions this season, winning five of nine home games.
  • AFC Wimbledon have won just four games all season and have not tasted victory since mid September.
  • Jordan Gibson has scored five goals in his last seven appearances for Crewe, making him the standout threat in this fixture.

Crewe Alexandra vs AFC Wimbledon Betting Tips

The overall shape of this game points pretty clearly toward Crewe. Home advantage, a superior recent record at the Mornflake Stadium, and an opponent who is badly short of confidence and goals make Bell’s side the logical pick. The bigger question is how to structure a bet around it, because Wimbledon, despite everything, have shown they can find the net from time to time, and Cornick and Stockley are experienced operators at this level.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Jordan Gibson is the standout pick here. Five goals in seven appearances is the kind of run that tells you a player is in the zone, and in a home cup tie against an out of form side, he has every reason to get on the scoresheet early. He presses high, gets into the box well, and the confidence is clearly flowing. Back him to open the scoring.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Wimbledon have been leaky and short of goals, but they are not entirely toothless, and Crewe have shipped goals in their recent poor run, most notably the five against Chesterfield. With Cornick and Stockley up front for the Dons, there is enough there to nick one, and Crewe should be getting on the board themselves. BTTS yes makes sense here at a decent price.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals. The Chesterfield result aside, Crewe can be a little conservative at home, but Wimbledon’s defensive record on the road this season is not one to trust. With Gibson in this form and both sides likely to be open to a goal or two, the game going over 2.5 is the stronger play. Three goals or more feels achievable in a fixture with this much at stake for both clubs.

Corners Prediction

Over 9.5 corners. Crewe tend to get bodies forward at home and look to work wide areas, while Wimbledon, playing against a team pressing high, could be pinned back for large spells. That kind of territorial pressure usually produces a healthy corner count. The visitors will also need to push forward when chasing the game if they fall behind, which only adds to the total.

Cards Prediction

Over 2.5 cards. FA Cup ties at this level tend to bring a physicality that the league sometimes does not, with both sides knowing a poor result here genuinely hurts. Wimbledon, under pressure and chasing the game, may well pick up a couple of bookings for cynical fouls as Crewe look to break on the counter. A niggly affair is likely, and the cards market reflects that.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
First Goalscorer Jordan Gibson
Both Teams To Score Yes
Over 2.5 Goals Over 2.5

Gibson scoring first ties directly into a game that produces goals at both ends, and if he opens the scoring early it only encourages Wimbledon to come forward and leave space for Crewe to exploit.

Final Match Prediction

Crewe Alexandra 2-1 AFC Wimbledon. The divisional gap between these sides matters less than the form gap, and that form gap is significant. Crewe at home, unbeaten on their own patch this season, with a goal machine in Gibson and a squad that has genuine FA Cup incentive, is a tough assignment for any team. For a Wimbledon side that has not won in eight attempts and is missing key attacking players through injury, it is a mountain to climb.

Bell’s side should have enough to get through, and a narrow 2-1 win feels right. Wimbledon are not so bad that they will be shut out entirely, and they showed against Stockport that they can score, but winning three points against this Crewe side on this ground looks well beyond them right now. The Railwaymen progress.
