Day 2 at the Stockholm Open serves up a decent card of first round action, with sixth seed Alex Michelsen the headline name as he makes his debut in the Swedish capital. There is plenty to get stuck into, so here are my thoughts on how each match plays out.
This is the first time these two have faced each other on tour. Leo Borg is ranked around 599 in the world and has been handed yet another Stockholm wild card, his sixth in total, but the results have been pretty grim so far. One win from five appearances tells its own story, and a difficult couple of years with injuries have not helped his development. The home crowd will be right behind him, and that counts for something, but it only goes so far.
Toby Samuel comes in with genuine momentum after beating Adrian Mannarino through qualifying, which is a proper scalp at this level. That win will have done wonders for his confidence ahead of a first ever main draw appearance. Samuel is the sharper, more in form player here and I do not see Borg having enough to cause him real problems over three sets.
Gojo leads this head to head one match to nil, so there is a little bit of history to consider. Machac has been playing some decent tennis over the past month but has had the misfortune of running into hot opponents early in tournaments, which has meant a string of tight defeats. Stockholm feels like a good opportunity for him to finally string some results together and finish his season on a positive note.
Gojo has not had a great deal of success at tour level this season, though he did come through qualifying with a win over Nikoloz Basilashvili, and that kind of victory can lift a player. The Croatian carries a big serve that can disrupt anyone on a given day, and that makes this matchup more competitive than the rankings suggest. Even so, Machac is the more complete ball striker and his experience in tight moments should see him through.
Michelsen holds a one win to nil record over Hanfmann from their previous meeting. The American arrives in Stockholm in reasonable nick after defeating Jiri Lehecka in Paris last week and then giving Carlos Alcaraz a genuine contest before going down. That kind of performance against top opposition shows his level is trending in the right direction on indoor hard courts.
Hanfmann is exactly the kind of opponent who can make life awkward. He hits the ball clean, owns a solid serve, and on the right day he can beat players ranked well above him. This should be a competitive three setter. The difference for me is that Michelsen is the more consistent operator from the baseline and has better control under pressure, which tends to be decisive in close indoor matches.
