Football punters can follow Chris Sutton’s predictions for every Premier League match taking place this season. However, he also shares his tips for FA Cup fixtures. The 2024/25 FA Cup gets underway
Chris Sutton is a former professional footballer from England. He was born on 10th March, 1973, in Nottingham, and played as a striker but was also capable of playing as a centre-half, particularly in the early and later stages of his career.
Sutton began his footballing career with Norwich City, where he emerged as one of the most promising young talents in English football. He made his debut for Norwich in 1991, and by the 1993-94 season, he had established himself as a top striker in the Premier League, scoring 25 goals. His performances caught the attention of several big clubs.
In 1994, Sutton transferred to Blackburn Rovers for a then-British record fee of £5 million. At Blackburn, he formed a striking partnership with Alan Shearer, known as the “SAS” (Shearer and Sutton) duo. Their partnership played a key part in Blackburn winning the Premier League title in the 1994-95 season.
After his time at Blackburn, Sutton moved to Chelsea in 1999 for £10 million. However, his time at Chelsea was less successful, and he struggled to find form, scoring only one league goal in his 28 appearances for the club. In 2000, Sutton moved to Celtic in Scotland, where he found his old form. At Celtic, Sutton had considerable success, winning several Scottish Premier League titles, Scottish Cups, and League Cups. He was also a key player in Celtic’s run to the 2003 UEFA Cup final.
After leaving Celtic in 2006, Sutton had brief stints with Birmingham City and Aston Villa before retiring from professional football in 2007 due to an eye injury.
On the international stage, Sutton earned one cap for the England national team in 1997, along with 13 caps for the England U21s. Despite his success at the club level, he was never a regular feature in the England squad, partly due to strong competition for places.
After retiring from football, Chris Sutton moved into media work. In 2021, Sutton replaced Mark Lawrenson as BBC Sports football prediction expert. His knowledge of top-flight football has helped him have two successful seasons tipping football matches, gaining a loyal following in the process.
For each Premier League and FA Cup game played throughout the season, Chris Sutton shares his match result and correct score predictions. He goes head-to-head with a celebrity each week, with points scored for predicting the correct result, and correct score. He’s come out on top over the course of the last two seasons he has been predicting for BBC Sport, often by a considerable margin.
