It certainly seems very strange that the US Masters is being held in the middle of November but the anticipation and excitement remain as high as ever for one of the great sporting and betting events of the year. It will be difficult to match the epic glory of Tiger Woods comeback Masters victory last year but golf at this level regularly produces moments of enthralling competition and outstanding personal achievement. Our each way tips for the 2020 Masters will take into account the players current form , Masters track record , form in the Major golf tournaments and expected weather conditions.
Woods Masters win in 2019 was part of the current sequence of 10 consecutive American wins in US based Majors in a row, something which has not happened for almost fifty years. The cream rises to the top at Augusta and the winner of the US Masters is generally found amongst the world’s elite with eight out of the last 10 winners having been ranked 16 or higher going into the tournament . The vast majority of the world top ranked players are American with only Jon Rahm , Tyrell Hatton , Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott featuring in the Top15 from outside the US.
Course form is of course particularly important at Augusta National as the Masters is played here every year and many players have particularly outstanding form here. We have summarised the form and chances of some of the leading contenders below :
Current World No.1 has great form at Augusta including joint 2nd in 2019 , recently ill with Covid19 but showed good return to form in last weekend’s Houston Open. Johnson has been in great form this year with wins in Northern Trust Championship and Travellers Championship.
Best Odds: 9/1 William Hill
2020 US Open winner and 4th in the PGA Championship the highlights in a superb year for the new beefed up Bryson . Will expect to improve on best Masters performance to-date which was a 21st place in 2016
Best Odds: 8/1 William Hill
Jon Rahm – current World No.2 and has performed well at Augusta with 4th place in 2018 his best showing. Rahm won the BMW and Memorial Championship this year
Best Odds: 11/1 William Hill
Has not been at his best since the re-start in mid Summer although was playing exceptionally well at the beginning of the year. Rory enjoyed five consecutive Top10 finishes at Masters until 21st last year. This is the only Major McIlroy still to win
Best Odds: 12/1 William Hill
Won the Fedex St Jude Invitational in the summer and been in typically consistently good form recently. Last year’s 12th was Thomas’s highest finish to-date at Augusta.
Best Odds: 12/1 Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook
Won the 2020 Tour Championship and has been consistently very good all year . Finished joint second with Johnson & Koepka at last year’s event. Yet to win a Major
Best Odds: 14/1 Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook
Has won 4 Majors and joint 2nd at 2019 Masters improved on his eleventh placed finish from 2017 having missed the 2018 tournament due to injury. Has dropped in rankings and form this year. Koepka showed almost back to his best at the recent Houston Open.
Best Odds: 16/1 Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook
Recent winner of the ZoZo Championship and finished inside the Masters Top 10 last year. Cantlay undoubtedly has the game to win a Major
Best Odds: 25/1 William Hill
The 2018 winner of the green jacket went on to finish 36th last year and in good consistent form this season although without a win to-date. Reed saves his best form for the major events.
Best Odds: 28/1 William Hill
A real course specialist with two Masters wins and 12th and 5th in the last two years. The World No.44 has two Top 10 finishes in his last two starts at the ZoZo Championship and the CJ Cup and is a live outsider.
Best Odds: 28/1 William Hill
Has been in outstanding form this year with two wins and a host of Top 10 finishes , will relish the opportunity to improve on previous US Master’s form. Good warm up week for Hatton at the Houston Open
Best Odds: 28/1 Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook
Scott is a previous Masters winner and has an outstanding record at Augusta. The World No.15 won the Genesis Invitational this year and has maintained consistent form all year.
Best Odds: 50/1 Bet365
With only 1 USPGA Tour win so far Finau has blown some great opportunities but is one of the top players week after week. Last year’s 5th finish at the Masters followed 10th in 2018 and he has eight Top 10 placings in 2020 so far ! Very strong performance in Houston Open preceding the Masters until a poor final round.
Best Odds: 35/1 Bet365
His 2019 Masters win will surely go down as one of the greatest sporting achievements but the fifteen time Major winner has struggled to re-capture anything like his best this year. Perhaps his favourite venue will inspire Tiger again but can not be fancied at current odds.
Best Odds: 35/1 Bet365 & Betfred
Another Augusta National course specialist and has found form again at the Houston Open in the week before the main event. Day was 5th in the 2019 Masters renewal and has found the Top10 on five occasions so far in 2020.
Best Odds: 35/1 Bet365
Has an extraordinary record at the US Masters including one win in 2015 and 2 second places but is badly out of form again. Speith is one of the great putters on Tour but still difficult to fancy this year.
Best Odds: 50/1 Bet365
William Hill are guaranteeing to be best odds for the Top10 in the Outright Winner market betting and offering each way terms of ⅕ Odds for 9 Places.
However some other bookmakers are offering equally competitive odds on some players and better each way odds for example :
Skybet ⅕ odds for 11 Places
Paddy Power ⅕ odds for 10 Places
Betfair Sportsbook ⅕ odds for 10 Places
Bet365 and Betfred ⅕ odd for 8 Places
The each way terms are particularly important here as the place part of the bet represents very good value in many cases.
Augusta National is an iconic Par72 golf course for both players and TV viewers and has many famous holes including the tricky par 3 12th where Jordan Speith took a quadruple bogey when leading in 2016 and the par 3 16th where Tiger Woods chipped in from 50ft on his way to victory in 2005. However it is the Par5’s that often determine the outcome.
At over 7400 yards the course rewards the big hitters and favours those with a right to left shot shape. This is likely to be particularly important this year with the event taking place in November the fairways should be softer than usual. There is not a lot of rough at Augusta and the fairways are pretty wide , the players just have to keep out of the trees that line most of the holes. The greens at Augusta are generally super fast and undulating and therefore very difficult.
1 point each way Brooks Koepka – outstanding player in Major golf tournaments in recent years. Great record at Augusta including joint 2nd last year. Returned to top form last weekend.
16/1 @ ⅕ Odds Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook
1 point each way Tony Finau – Consistent form in recent months and great record at Masters with Top10 in last 2 years. Good value at current odds
33/1 @ ⅕ Odds William Hill
0.5 points each way Francesco Molinari – Major winner, joint 5th last year and has shown good return to form.
110/1 @ ⅕ Odds 8 Places Bet365 or 90/1 @ ⅕ Odds 10 Places Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook
