The DP World Tour returns to one of British golf’s most recognisable venues this week as the British Masters heads back to the Brabazon Course at The Belfry. It is the first of two events we are covering this week, with our golf tipster having three each-way selections lined up. Betfred sponsor the tournament and are offering enhanced each-way terms of 1/5 odds for eight places, which gives us a bit more to work with when looking beyond the favourites.
The British Masters has been around in various forms since 1946, when it was first played as the Dunlop Masters. The tournament disappeared from the schedule following the 2008 edition before returning in 2015, and it has since become a regular fixture on the DP World Tour.
A number of well-known British golfers have hosted the tournament since its return, including Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood and Danny Willett. Sir Nick Faldo takes on hosting duties again this year for the fourth consecutive edition.
The Belfry needs little introduction. The Warwickshire venue has hosted four Ryder Cups and plenty of professional tournaments over the years, while the Brabazon Course has been the permanent home of the British Masters since 2021.
It will play as a par 72 measuring 7,336 yards this week. It is relatively flat and mostly tree-lined, with narrow fairways in places and water coming into play on seven holes.
The most famous example is the short par-four 10th. It is a hole where players can take on the green from the tee, but the water makes an aggressive approach far from straightforward. Decisions like that are a big part of what makes the Brabazon interesting to watch.
The Poa Annua greens are generally quite small, while the larger putting surfaces contain plenty of tiers and undulations. Missing in the wrong place can leave some awkward recovery shots, making a solid short game useful when the irons are not quite firing.
Scoring has varied quite considerably over recent editions. Thorbjorn Olesen and Daniel Hillier both won at 10 under in 2022 and 2023, while Niklas Norgaard and Alex Noren reached 16 under in each of the last two years.
Accuracy from the tee proved particularly useful last year. The first four on the leaderboard all ranked sixth or better for Driving Accuracy, although previous editions suggest there is no single driving profile required to win here.
Greens in Regulation looks a much more reliable place to start. Players towards the top of that category have regularly populated the leaderboard, even in years when the eventual champion has not ranked particularly highly.
The same applies to Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green. Nicolai Hojgaard topped that category when finishing runner-up last year, while the first two home in 2024 ranked second and first. Rasmus Hojgaard also ranked second when winning the UK Championship here in 2020.
Putting is slightly harder to judge. Alex Noren putted brilliantly on his way to victory last year and Rasmus Hojgaard did likewise in 2020, but other recent champions have won without producing anything particularly special on the greens.
Scrambling has produced a similar mix of results, although the ability to recover from missed greens certainly should not be dismissed around a course where finding the wrong section can leave a difficult up and down.
There are some useful course correlations too. Rinkven, home of the Soudal Open, has repeatedly produced players who also perform well at The Belfry. Both are tree-lined layouts and several golfers have now contended at both venues.
One of the most interesting things about the British Masters is the number of bigger-priced winners. Alex Noren was fairly well fancied last year, but the tournament has previously been won by Daniel Hillier, Richard Bland and Marcus Kinhult at substantial pre-tournament prices.
Four of the last seven champions have been available at triple-figure prices before the tournament began, so there is certainly an argument for looking further down the market.
Scandinavian golfers have enjoyed an especially good record. Swedish players have won four of the last 15 professional events staged at The Belfry, while Danish golfers have won three of the last six. Nicolai Hojgaard’s runner-up finish last year continued that trend.
Sunday at The Belfry can also get very interesting. At least one player has traded at odds-on and failed to win in five of the last six tournaments here, while several eventual champions have looked unlikely winners at some stage during the final round.
Daniel Hillier was a particularly dramatic example in 2023, producing a superb eagle-birdie-eagle finish across holes 15, 16 and 17 on his way to victory. Thorbjorn Olesen also looked to have thrown away his chance in 2022 before finishing eagle-birdie to snatch the title.
It means this is one event where the leaderboard can change very quickly on Sunday afternoon. With eight places available on Betfred’s enhanced each-way terms and three selections from our golf tipster, there should be plenty to follow across all four days.
It all comes down to this on the PGA Tour. After the FedEx St Jude Championship and BMW Championship whittled the field down from 70 players to just 30, the survivors head to East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta for the Tour Championship. Our golf tipster has another three each-way selections for the season finale, with his tips across this week’s two tournaments ranging from 8/1 to 18/1.
The Tour Championship dates back to 1987, when Tom Watson won the inaugural tournament under its original Nabisco Championship name. It was designed to bring the PGA Tour season to a close with an elite 30-player field, something it still does almost 40 years later.
The tournament became the final stop of the FedEx Cup Playoffs when the series was introduced in 2007, although its format has changed several times since.
The biggest change came in 2019 with the introduction of staggered starting scores. The FedEx Cup leader would begin the tournament at 10 under, two shots ahead of second place, with the remaining players starting at different scores according to their position in the standings.
That system was eventually scrapped ahead of last year’s tournament. All 30 players now start on level terms again, meaning the Tour Championship is once more a conventional 72-hole tournament where everyone begins with exactly the same opportunity.
Tommy Fleetwood took advantage last year, arriving as a 14/1 chance before winning by three strokes. He followed names including Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay on a trophy that has rarely been short of star quality.
East Lake Golf Club is another venue with plenty of history. The course dates back to 1904 and was extensively redesigned by Donald Ross in 1913, before undergoing several further changes over the following century.
The latest major renovation came ahead of the 2024 Tour Championship. Andrew Green used aerial photography from 1949 to restore some of Ross’ original ideas while making changes suited to the modern game.
Every tee, fairway, green and bunker was rebuilt. The fairways were switched to Zorro Zoysia and reshaped in places to encourage more movement along the ground, while the greens were converted to TifEagle Bermudagrass.
East Lake now plays as a par 70 measuring 7,490 yards. That is plenty of golf for a par 70, but outright driving distance has not traditionally been the deciding factor here.
Accuracy can be useful, but the numbers suggest what happens after the tee shot is far more important. Finding greens and producing a strong week with the putter have been common themes among recent champions.
Before Fleetwood’s victory last year, three of the previous four winners had topped the Greens in Regulation rankings. Seven of the eight champions before Fleetwood also ranked third or better for Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green.
Putting has become particularly important. The last four champions have ranked first, third, third and first for Putting Average, so anyone struggling on the greens could find it very difficult to keep pace in such a strong 30-man field.
There are also some interesting clues to be found on other Donald Ross courses. Sedgefield Country Club, home of the Wyndham Championship, has produced a particularly strong crossover with East Lake.
Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Henrik Stenson, Brandt Snedeker and Jim Furyk are among the players to have produced notable results at both venues, while more recent contenders have strengthened that link.
That makes recent Wyndham form worth another look, alongside results at other Ross-influenced layouts such as Detroit Golf Club.
Form throughout the FedEx Cup Playoffs is naturally another big consideration. Players getting hot at this stage of the season have a habit of staying hot.
Viktor Hovland and Patrick Cantlay both won the BMW Championship immediately before winning at East Lake, while Tiger Woods, Camilo Villegas and Billy Horschel have also won the final two Playoff events in the same season.
In fact, someone has won twice during the FedEx Cup Playoffs in nine of the last 13 seasons. With only three events in the series, that is a trend worth paying attention to when assessing the 30 players left standing.
The smaller field changes the betting picture considerably. There is no cut and every golfer is guaranteed four rounds, which removes one of the biggest risks associated with each-way betting in a normal PGA Tour event.
It does not necessarily mean the winner has to come from the very top of the market either. Fleetwood was 14/1 last year, while Xander Schauffele produced a much bigger shock when winning in 2017.
East Lake is not necessarily a course where the tournament is decided on Thursday or Friday. Although several recent editions under the staggered scoring system became fairly predictable, the traditional format has previously produced some big swings.
Phil Mickelson was seven shots behind after his opening round before winning in 2009, while Camilo Villegas made up five shots during the final round before eventually beating Sergio Garcia in a playoff a year earlier.
Rory McIlroy has also shown what can happen around here when chasing from behind. He overturned a six-shot deficit going into the final round in 2022, although that came under the old staggered-start format.
With everyone beginning level again, there should be far more scope for movement throughout the four days. Thirty of the best-performing golfers from the PGA Tour season, no cut and everything decided over 72 holes makes for a fitting way to bring the FedEx Cup Playoffs to a close.
