WhichBookie racing analyst Andrew Blair White provides a preview and betting tips for races at Limerick on Friday 27th May.
Newmarket is considered ‘The Home of Horse Racing’ and the racecourse is host to several big races and meetings throughout the year, including two of the countries five Classic Races – the 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas,
Newmarket Racecourse consists of two individual courses, the Rowley Mile Course and the July Course.
The Rowley Mile is host to races taking place throughout the spring and Autumn and despite the name, is actually slightly longer than one mile.
Both the 1,000 Guineas and the 2,000 Guineas are run on this iconic course which is named after Charles II’s favourite stallion, Old Rowley.
The course is exceptionally wide and features ‘The Dip’ which consists of a furlong downhill before the final uphill furlong to the post.
Being a relatively straight course, the draw bias is less important.
The July Course is used throughout the summer months and features ‘The Bunbury Mile’ which is a one mile straight.
Similar to The Rowley Mile, it has an ‘L’ shape with just one bend at a slightly more demanding angle.
There is actually a third course at Newmarket which is the Round Course. This course is used only for The Newmarket Town Plate which takes place once a year in August.
The famous QIPCO Guineas Festival hosts three days of flat racing taking place over the first weekend in May. Festivities begin on the Friday, followed by the 2,000 Guineas on the Saturday and the 1,000 Guineas on the Sunday. The meeting has historically been held over two days but was increased to three in 2021 with that structure continuing in the years ahead.
The July Festival meeting is one of the highlights of the summer flat season and given the time of year it takes place, it is extremely popular with spectators.
The festival takes place over three days in July starting with Ladies day on the Thursday, followed by Abu Dhabi Day on the Friday and Darley Day on the final day.
Newmarket Racecourse hosts various Class 1 races throughout the flat season with the majority of them being held on the Rowley Mile.
