The quarterfinals at the Swiss Indoors Basel have shaped up into a genuinely compelling set of matches. The early rounds have already thrown up some excellent results and the quality of tennis is only going to climb from here as the last eight battle it out for semifinal spots. Here is how I see each match going.
Struff is 36 years old and absolutely thriving on it this week. Reaching the quarterfinals at Basel for the second time in his career is impressive enough, but doing it by knocking out Novak Djokovic, a player he had never beaten in eight previous attempts, makes it all the more special. He played with real conviction in that match and took his chances when they came. Borges also had a strong result getting past Casper Ruud, and reaching his first indoor quarterfinal of the season is no small feat for the Portuguese player.
Borges does hold the only previous meeting between these two this season, so there is a case for him. But form is what matters most at this stage of a tournament and Struff looks sharp, confident and very much in the zone right now. That counts for a huge amount on fast indoor courts where belief and momentum can carry you through.
This is a fascinating match on paper and Rune deserves enormous credit for how he has performed this week. Getting through Hubert Hurkacz in a deciding set tiebreak is the kind of result that shows a player is mentally right. Rune has been building with every round and for someone who has been searching for consistent form at tour level this season, this has been a genuinely encouraging week. Vacherot holds a win over Rune in their only previous meeting, so he will come into this with confidence and is a tricky opponent who can trouble anyone on his day.
Rune has already dealt with two big servers this week and handled the pressure moments well. Vacherot is another quality test but I think Rune is in the right headspace to see it through. If it comes down to tiebreaks, Rune’s ability to raise his level at the crucial moments should see him over the line.
Lehecka has been utterly ruthless this week. Beating Wawrinka in round one and then dismissing Altmaier in straight sets shows exactly the kind of focused, professional tennis the Czech player is capable of on these quick indoor surfaces. The conditions in Basel suit his game brilliantly and he has looked a level above his opponents so far. It would take something quite remarkable to knock him off course at this stage.
Jerome Kym is the local wildcard fairy tale of the tournament and what a run he is having. Beating Ben Shelton for his first top ten win was a stunning result and the crowd will be right behind him. But backing that up against an in-form Lehecka is an enormous ask. Kym is playing with freedom and has nothing to lose, which makes him dangerous, but experience and consistency should win out here.
Fils is playing with real purpose at the moment and the win over Alex Michelson, coming back from a set down, showed his fighting qualities. The second seed is inching closer to securing his place at the ATP Finals and that extra motivation will sharpen his focus. Fritz got through his quarterfinal spot comfortably enough, beating Denis Shapovalov in straight sets, and will be hunting a first top ten win away from grass this season. That is a notable gap in his record and one he will be keen to address.
Indoors, Fritz’s serve is a real weapon and that reliability becomes even more valuable on a fast surface where free points matter enormously. However, Fils already has a win over Fritz this season and brings superior athleticism and aggression to the court. If it goes deep and tiebreaks are involved, Fils has the nerves and the movement to come out on top. Fritz will make it competitive but I expect the Frenchman to find a way through.
