The WTA Guangzhou Open has reached the quarterfinal stage and the draw has thrown up some genuinely interesting contests. Two Chinese players are still alive and chasing what would be a historic home triumph, and with every match in this round a first meeting between the two players involved, there are no easy reads. Here is how I see all four quarterfinals playing out.
Kaitlin Quevedo is in serious form right now. The 20-year-old American picked up her first tour title in Sao Paulo just last month and she has not slowed down since. Here in Guangzhou she beat Sofia Kenin in round one and then held firm against Anna Bondar, saving nine of ten break points to win 7-5 6-3. That kind of nerve under pressure is not something you can fake, and it tells you this player has genuinely learned how to close out matches at tour level.
Jil Teichmann is a proper opponent though. The Swiss left-hander dropped the first set against Zeynep Sonmez before turning the match completely on its head and winning 4-6 6-3 6-1. She showed at Roland Garros this year that she still has plenty in the tank on hard courts too. This will be competitive, but Quevedo’s momentum, her composure when the pressure is on, and her confidence after that Sao Paulo title all point in the same direction.
Prediction: Quevedo in 3
Sun Xinran is the name everyone in Guangzhou is talking about this week, and rightly so. The 16-year-old came into this tournament as the reigning US Open junior champion and she has backed it up with some remarkable tennis. She knocked out third seed Maria Timofeeva in a deciding set tiebreak to reach her first tour level quarterfinal, having already beaten Mananchaya Sawangkaew in the opening round. She also reached the third round at the China Open earlier this season before Coco Gauff stopped her. The fearlessness in her ball striking is something you cannot teach.
Claire Liu gets here having not played a ball after Katerina Siniakova pulled out, so she arrives fresh and with no miles in her legs. She also knows this tournament well and is one win away from a second consecutive Guangzhou semifinal. That experience and freshness matter. Even so, Sun Xinran’s form this week has been extraordinary and her momentum is a real force.
Prediction: Sun in 3
Lilli Tagger is one of the most exciting teenagers on tour right now. The Austrian already has a WTA title to her name from Prague, she is the youngest player inside the top 50, and that one-handed backhand causes opponents all sorts of problems. She should come into this match looking to set the tempo from the off, using her slice to pull Shi Han wide and looking to close things out at the net when the opportunity arises. If her first serve is landing, she is very difficult to live with.
Shi Han is no pushover and she will not be intimidated by the occasion. She came through as a wildcard at this tournament in 2024 and made the second round, and this season she has been through qualifying to reach the third round at Wuhan. Her game is about patience and depth, grinding rallies until something breaks down. She has the tools to take a set if Tagger gets loose. But a teenager who is playing freely and swinging without fear is a tough puzzle to solve over three sets.
Prediction: Tagger in 3
Paula Badosa has been very tidy in Guangzhou. She beat Carol Zhao in the first round and then dispatched Sinja Kraus 6-1 6-4 in just 67 minutes, winning 82 percent of her first serve points in that match. For a player who has had a frustrating 2026 with only a final run at the Iasi Open to shout about, this is the kind of clean and clinical tennis she needs to build on. She looks focused and sharp.
Harriet Dart deserves real credit for getting here. The Briton knocked out second seed Janice Tjen 6-4 3-6 6-3, which is her second top 50 win of the year and her first tour quarterfinal since Eastbourne in 2024. She will absolutely make Badosa work for this, and she is playing well enough to take a set. Badosa does hold the head to head advantage from their 2023 United Cup meeting, and her current level of serving and hitting should be enough to see her through.
Prediction: Badosa in 3
