Ballinrobe Racecourse is about a mile outside the town on the Castlebar road, close to Lough Carra and the Wild Atlantic Way. It stages a mix of Flat and National Hunt racing from April to September, and many of its meetings are lively summer evening cards that draw big local crowds.
The Ballinrobe race card today shows every runner and rider, the draw for Flat races, recent form, the latest odds and race times. It updates from final declarations right up to the off, so non-runners and going changes show as soon as they're announced. If you're looking for Ballinrobe racing tips for today, here are some general tips to keep in mind for the track:
The Ballinrobe race track is a slightly raised, right-handed oval of about a mile on the Flat, with a run-in of roughly a furlong. The back straight runs uphill, and the finish runs downhill, which helps horses that are already in front. Longer Flat races use an inner loop.
Over jumps, the course is a right-handed oval of about nine furlongs, with six fences per circuit. Three of those fences are in the back straight, and the last fence comes up just after the turn into the straight. It's a sharp test that suits nimble, quick horses more than big, galloping types.
On the Flat, middle to high draws are an advantage in big-field handicaps over shorter trips, while over a mile and a furlong or more the draw doesn't matter much. Over jumps, there's no draw, but a prominent position is a big advantage on this tight track.
Ballinrobe races in spring and summer, so the going is usually good or good to yielding. Heavy summer rain in the west of Ireland can soften it quickly, though, so it's worth checking the latest going report before racing.
Ballinrobe also has a link with Grand National history, as Tiger Roll won his first chase there in 2016 before going on to win two Aintree Grand Nationals.
Racing around Ballinrobe has a long tradition, and the earliest recorded race meetings date back to 1774. Racing has been held at the current site, about a mile outside the town, since 1921. In recent years the course has been upgraded with a new grandstand, an enlarged enclosure, a restaurant and stabling for 108 horses, and it's now one of four racecourses in Connacht.
Gordon Elliott is the leading National Hunt trainer at Ballinrobe with 61 winners. John Patrick Ryan (37) and Willie Mullins (28, at 26%) are next. On the Flat, Jessica Harrington and Joseph O'Brien have each trained 15 winners, and O'Brien has the better strike rate at 21%.
Ruby Walsh is still the leading National Hunt jockey at Ballinrobe with 49 winners, ahead of Paul Townend (38) and Barry Geraghty (35). The late Pat Smullen is the leading Flat jockey with 50 winners. Source: IrishRacing.com.
Ballinrobe Racecourse is about a mile outside the town, on the Castlebar road (N84) in Co. Mayo. Adult tickets cost €15 online in advance or €20 on the day, and there are concessions for students and pensioners. Children under 14 go free with an adult.
The Coranna restaurant and a range of group packages are available, and the Friday meetings often sell out. Summer evening racing is a big part of the Ballinrobe experience, and the July meeting also includes a Race Dance in the Mask Pavilion after racing.
Every Ballinrobe meeting is shown live on Racing TV, which covers all Irish racing in the UK and Ireland. Many bookmakers also offer free live streams to customers who have a funded account or have placed a bet on the race.
All the major UK and Irish bookmakers price up every Ballinrobe race. Look for Best Odds Guaranteed on Irish racing, and extra places on bigger handicaps such as the McHale Mayo National and the Tote Handicap in July.
