History

The first recorded Bellewstown races appeared in the Dublin Gazette and Weekly Courier in August 1726. By the mid-18th century, meetings had grown to five days and drew large crowds. George Tandy, a former Mayor of Drogheda, later persuaded King George III to sponsor a race here. Known as His Majesty's Plate, it was worth £100 and ran for around two centuries. Racing moved to its present home on the Hill of Crockafotha in 1859.

Bellewstown is also famous for the Yellow Sam betting coup of 1975, one of the best-known gambles in Irish racing. To mark its 300th anniversary in 2026, the course opened a new weigh room and the 1726 Restaurant.
