Chelmsford City Race Course Guide

The Chelmsford City race course is a left-handed all-weather oval of about eight and a half furlongs, with sweeping bends and a two-furlong home straight.

The bends are more generous than at some other all-weather tracks, which gives horses a chance to get into their stride before the straight. Planning permission for a turf course inside the all-weather track was granted in 2018, but no racing has been held on it.

The track is about 50 miles from Newmarket, so it attracts plenty of runners from the big Newmarket yards, and the prize money has always been well regarded by trainers.

Draw and Surface

As on most all-weather tracks, a good early position is valuable at Chelmsford. Horses drawn close to the inside can save ground round the bends. In the straight, though, the centre of the track often rides better than the inside rail, so a horse with a good draw still needs to find a clear run.

Because the surface is artificial, the going is consistent through the year, and meetings are rarely lost to the weather. That makes Chelmsford a reliable option for winter racing.

The 2026 Closure and Return

The former operator, Great Leighs Estates Limited, went into administration in March 2026. The BHA then refused a racecourse licence to the proposed new operator, Golden Mile Racing Limited, and Chelmsford's Easter fixtures, including a valuable Good Friday card, were cancelled. An appeal was dismissed in June, and the course's remaining 2026 fixtures were moved to other venues.

In July 2026, Arena Racing Company agreed terms to run the course, and it has since signed a multi-year lease with the freeholder. ARC has applied for a racecourse licence, and racing is provisionally set to return on 2 November 2026. Once it reopens, Chelmsford will be shown on Sky Sports Racing.

Big Races at Chelmsford

• Queen Charlotte Fillies' Stakes: A Listed race over seven furlongs for fillies and mares aged four and over. In 2022 and 2023, it was worth £100,000, which made it the most valuable Listed race in Britain.
• Chelmer Fillies' Stakes: This Listed six-furlong race for three-year-old fillies was first run in 2019 and is usually staged in spring.
• Cardinal Stakes: A one-mile race for three-year-olds, first run in 2019. It used to be part of the European qualifying series for the Kentucky Derby.

History

The course opened as Great Leighs in 2008. It was the first new racecourse in Britain for more than 80 years, but it went into administration and lost its licence in January 2009.

It reopened as Chelmsford City Racecourse in January 2015 and became a busy all-weather venue, with 38 meetings in 2025. After another period in administration in 2026, it's now set to reopen under Arena Racing Company.
