If you’re looking for some Newmarket tips for today’s races, here are some general reminders to keep to the forefront of your mind:
Newmarket is one of the most notable tracks in the world and it’s home to two of Britain’s 5 Classics and several of the year’s top two-year-old races. It’s a Flat-only venue run by The Jockey Club, with two separate courses on Newmarket Heath.
The Rowley Mile is used in spring and autumn, hosting the Guineas and the big October meetings. It’s a wide galloping straight course for a mile and a quarter, named after King Charles II’s horse Old Rowley. Longer races start on the Cesarewitch course and join the straight after the right-handed turn.
The July Course is used from June to August, including the July Festival, and most Newmarket Nights. It has a straight mile, with longer races run on a right-handed loop which joins the straight.
Both courses have a dip around a furlong before the finish, which is followed by an uphill run to the line. This means that Newmarket is a stiff test for any horses that struggle to truly stay.
The draw at Newmarket is dependent on the stall placement and where the pace develops. Big fields will usually split into two groups and one side can be favoured on the day, so it’s worth watching early races on the card.
The going varies through the season. The Rowley Mile is often softer in spring and autumn. The July Course can ride good to firm in the summer, with watering used to keep the ground safe.
Newmarket holds several Group 1 races across the year including the following:
Racing at Newmarket dates back to the early 17th century when King James I discovered the heath, before King Charles II made it the centre of the sport in later years. The Jockey Club, which was created in the 1750s, made Newmarket its home and is still the course’s owner today.
The 2000 Guineas first took place in 1809 and the Cambridgeshire and Cesarewitch both date back to 1839. Thousands of horses are still trained around the heath’s gallops, with many of the country’s leading trainers based there. Tattersalls bloodstock, the National Horseracing Museum, and the National Stud are also in Newmarket.
Newmarket Racecourses are at Westfield House, The Links, Newmarket, Suffolk, CB8 0TGF. Newmarket is about 13 miles from Cambridge and there are trains running regularly between the two places.
Tickets can be bought through the Jockey Club website, with prices varying by meeting. Newmarket Nights on Fridays during the summer are a combination between evening racing and live music.
