Sligo's position on the Atlantic side of Ireland means rain is never far away. Because the track sits in a natural bowl, water collects and the ground can get heavy, especially at the jumps fixtures.
Summer evening meetings can ride faster after a dry spell, but soft ground is common. Check the going on the morning of racing, as it can change the shape of a race completely.
We don't currently post daily Sligo racing tips, but these course features are worth keeping in mind:
Sligo is a right-handed track with a circuit of around one mile. It's sharp and undulating, with a gradual incline up to the winning post. The course hosts both Flat and National Hunt racing, and its setting in a natural bowl gives racegoers good views of much of the action from the stands.
On the Flat, a low draw near the inside rail can help on such a tight, right-handed circuit, as runners save ground on the bends. The effect is less marked on soft ground, when the field tends to spread out. With heavy going common, the ground often matters more than the draw.
Sligo doesn't have one headline race. Instead, its calendar is built around themed racedays that draw big local crowds.
Racing in Sligo goes back to at least 1781. For many years, local meetings were held at Hazelwood, until that course closed in 1942. After a 13-year gap, racing returned to the town at Cleveragh in 1955, and the course has hosted meetings there ever since. It's still sometimes called Cleveragh Racecourse by locals.
The course is on Cleveragh Road, Sligo, F91 EE95, around 1km from the town centre, so many racegoers simply walk from town. Sligo is well connected by the N4 from Dublin and the N17 from Galway, and the railway station has direct trains to Dublin Connolly.
Sligo races tickets can be bought through the County Sligo Races website, along with hospitality packages in the Cleveragh Suite. Children are welcome, and the Family Day in July is designed with them in mind.

It pays to choose your bookie carefully. Best odds guaranteed is especially useful at Sligo, where the market can move sharply once the going is confirmed. You'll be paid at the starting price if it's bigger than the odds you took.
