If you're looking for Thirsk racing tips for today, here are some general tips to keep in mind for the track:
The Thirsk race course is a left-handed oval of about a mile and a quarter, with a run-in of about half a mile. The round course is almost totally flat, with easy turns. The main exception is the undulating top bend, where a ridge can unbalance horses. The separate straight six-furlong course is slightly undulating throughout.
Thirsk is generally regarded as a sharp track that suits handy, nimble horses. In sprints, the stands' rail can be a big help, while on the round course a good position into the straight is more important than stamina.
On the straight course, high draws have the advantage on good or faster ground, especially for horses that can race near the stands' rail. For softer ground, the advantage is usually smaller. On the round course, a handy position into the home straight matters more than the draw.
Thirsk races in spring and summer, so the going is often good or good to firm, and most of its recent fastest times have come on good to firm ground. After summer rain, though, the bends can become slippery, and that has led to some races being abandoned in recent seasons.
On 28 August 2026, Thirsk had to call off four races after a horse slipped on the bend in the opening race and unseated his rider. Clerk of the course James Sanderson said the decision was made in the interest of safety, and one race was moved to the straight course.
A similar problem happened in August 2025, when two races were abandoned after riders reported the bottom bend was greasy and inconsistent following overnight rain.
Racing in the Thirsk area goes back to at least 1612, when King James I offered a gold cup at Hambleton, at the top of Sutton Bank. The present course opened in 1855 on the Thirsk Hall estate.
The future King Edward VII visited in 1895. In 1940, Thirsk staged a wartime substitute St Leger, and in 1989 it hosted the November Handicap after Doncaster's St Leger meeting was abandoned. A 1960s stand was demolished in 2025, and a new £5 million grandstand is planned for 2027.
Over the last three seasons, David O'Meara has trained the most winners at Thirsk with 24. Tim Easterby and Michael Dods are next on 17 each, followed by Kevin Ryan (13) and Karl Burke (12).
Danny Tudhope is the leading jockey at Thirsk with 22 winners at a 24% strike rate. Connor Beasley, Paul Mulrennan, Jason Hart and Callum Rodriguez are also among the most successful riders at the course. Source: At The Races.
Thirsk Racecourse is on Station Road, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, YO7 1QL. It's close to the Great North Road and the East Coast Main Line, so it's easy to reach by car or train. A Premier Season Ticket for all 2026 fixtures costs £180, and hospitality packages start from £59 per person. The new grandstand development will cause some temporary disruption in the Premier Enclosure during the 2027 season.
Thirsk has several family days and a Ladies' Day each season. There's no published formal dress code, but many racegoers dress up for Ladies' Day.
Every Thirsk meeting is shown live on Racing TV, and Sky Bet Sunday Series cards are typically shown on ITV Racing. Many bookmakers also offer free live streams to customers who have a funded account or have placed a bet.
All the major bookmakers price up every Thirsk race. Look for Best Odds Guaranteed, and extra places on big-field handicaps such as the Thirsk Hunt Cup and the Summer Cup.
Thirsk races from April to September. The 2026 season ended on 14 September, and racing returns on Saturday 17 April 2027.
On 28 August 2026, four races were called off after a horse slipped on the bend, making the track unsafe. A similar problem happened in August 2025 after overnight rain made the bend greasy.
The Thirsk Hunt Cup is run in early May. In 2027, it's on Saturday 1 May.
Ladies' Day is usually held in early September. In 2026, it was on Saturday 5 September.
