1.50 Newbury - Friday
Horse Racing analyst Will Smith has had a good look at all this weekend's ante-post markets, and provides a 7/1 EW selection in the Grade 2 novices' chase at Newbury on Friday.
Southampton joined the Premier League when it was created back in 1992 and had a thirteen year stint in the top-flight before being relegated to the Championship where they spent five seasons.
Following their promotion back into the Premier League in 2012, former Spurs & PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino took charge of the club and helped shape Southampton back into side that could compete in England’s top league. They had a relatively positive spell over the course of the next four seasons where they finished in the top 8 four year’s running with a highest season finish of 6th in 2016.
However, the last six seasons have been disappointing for Southampton fans with their side finishing in the bottom half of the table each year. The Saints have been close to relegation on several occasions but their current campaign is of huge concern and their manager is under increasing pressure to turn things around before time runs out.
Ralph Hasenhüttl was in charge of Southampton for almost four years before he was sacked by the St Mary’s club in November 2022. Hasenhüttl was replaced by the then assistant manager, Rubén Sellés on a temporary basis until a permanent replacement was found. Ex-Luton Town & Stoke City manager Nathan Jones was recruited to to take charge of the squad in November 2022 on a three-and-a-half-year contract but was sacked after just 8 matches, only 1 of which his team managed to win, making him the shortest serving non-caretaker manager in Southampton’s history.
Sellés’ second stint as a caretaker manager came following the dismissal of Jones in February 2023 and he was appointed full manager of the club until the end of the 2022/23 season.
Rubén Sellés is relatively inexperienced as a manager at the top level and has yet to prove his worth in the role based on Southampton’s league position since his appointment.
Rubén Sellés was given until the end of the season to prove he has what it takes to manage at the top level. However, should he not guide the Saints away from the relegation zone, it’s likely that he could be replaced before that time and the bookies have Sellés as one of the most likely Premier League managers to be sacked next.
A list of possible replacements for Sellés as the next manager of Southampton are listed below.

Only one manager has lasted 3 seasons or more in charge of Southampton since Chris Nicholl departed back in 1992. Southampton have yet to find consistency with any of their appointments which had lead to several changes in management over the years.
