Sunderland experienced a notable period of success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, securing promotions to the Premier League. However, they were relegated multiple times in the following years, with their longest stint in the top flight being 10 consecutive seasons from 2007 – 2017.
After being relegated to the Championship at the end of the 2016/17 season, Sunderland fell straight down into League One the following season and have been pushing for a return to the Premier League ever since. They were promoted back into the Championship at the end of the 2023 season where they finished 6th but were knocked out of the playoffs by defeat to Luton Town.
Although progress has been made in recent seasons, Sunderland have lacked stability without a long term manger.

It was announced on Monday 19th February that Sunderland had sacked head coach Michael Beale after just 12 games in charge of the club.
Beale was appointed in December 2023 on a two-and-a-half-year deal but managed just four wins during his short stint on Wearside.
Sunderland’s 3-0 defeat to local rivals Newcastle United in the FA Cup was followed by two more consecutive losses against Ipswich and Hull. Although things looked like they were improving for Beales side after picking up seven points from their next three matches, defeats swiftly followed against Huddersfield and Birmingham which ultimately resulted in the managers dismissal.
Mike Dodds was appointed as the interim manager of the club with the search for the next permanent Sunderland manager underway.
With Sunderland having departed ways with Michael Beale, the hunt is once again on for the next manager to take the reigns at the club.
