Charlton Athletic
Sheffield UnitedCharlton Athletic are running out of places to hide. Four straight defeats, 21st in the Championship table, and a gap of just four points to the bottom three. This is not a wobble anymore, this is a crisis developing in real time, and Sheffield United arriving at The Valley is about as difficult a fixture as Nathan Jones could have asked for right before the international break. The Blades are flying right now, full of confidence after back to back wins, and sitting just one point off the playoff places. One side desperately needs three points to calm the nerves. The other sees this as a chance to go into the break with serious momentum.
Jones will know that another defeat here could make for a very uncomfortable fortnight while the internationals are away. Sheffield United, meanwhile, have a chance to leapfrog West Ham into the top eight if results go their way. The stakes could not be much higher at The Valley this weekend.
This Championship fixture takes place at The Valley in south east London. Charlton are hosting a Sheffield United side who have been one of the form teams in the second tier over the past six weeks, and the contrast in confidence between these two clubs heading into this one could hardly be more stark. Both teams will be motivated by the fact that a win here shapes how they approach the international break, one looking to escape the shadow of relegation, the other looking to cement a playoff challenge.
Charlton have a few selection decisions to make, particularly in attack, while Sheffield United are dealing with a couple of notable absences up front but are otherwise close to full strength.
Jones has a tricky call to make in attack after his side were toothless once again against Bolton. Leaburn coming on and changing the game slightly at half time might tempt the manager into starting him, with Campbell as the focal point and Grant and Knibbs offering width. Coventry anchors the midfield, and Mannion keeps his place in goal after being preferred over Okonkwo last time out.
Charlton Athletic: Mannion; McNamara, Jones, Koumetio, Bell; Coventry; Alli, Knibbs, Grant, Campbell; Leaburn
Wilder should stick close to what worked at Deepdale on Tuesday. Kitching walks straight back into the back four now his suspension is served. Riedewald and Peck in the middle, with Chong and Donovan providing width. Up top, Brereton Diaz and Cannon lead the line in the continued absence of Bamford.
Sheffield United: Cooper; Choudhury, Tanganga, Kitching, Burrows; Chong, Peck, Riedewald, Donovan; Brereton Diaz, Cannon
Where do you start with Charlton right now? They actually looked decent early in the season, winning three of their first three league matches, but everything has unravelled since. Five draws and six defeats in the 11 games that followed tells its own story, and the last four matches have all ended in defeat. Watford, Norwich, Middlesbrough, and then Bolton at home in midweek, where Sam Dalby’s early goal was enough to settle it. Six goals scored and 20 conceded across those 11 games is relegation form, and the fact that they are only four points above the drop zone reflects just how thin the margins are down there.
Sheffield United’s journey this season has gone in the exact opposite direction. Nine points from the first eight games had people questioning whether Wilder could get this group performing, but they have been a different animal since the opening international break. Thirteen points from six games, four wins and a draw, and they have only lost once on the road all season in that period. The win over Wrexham was comfortable enough, and then coming from behind to beat Preston 3 to 2 at Deepdale on Tuesday, with Sydie Peck grabbing a first half hat trick, is the sort of result that tells you a team is well and truly in form. Twenty two points from 14 games, ninth in the table, and just one point off a top eight spot.
The momentum graphic here writes itself. Charlton are heading in one direction and Sheffield United are heading in the other. The concern for Jones is that his side look low on confidence and low on goals, and they are about to face a team that just conceded 17 all season. That is a problem.
These two clubs have met plenty of times across the lower leagues and the Championship over the years, and historically it has been a relatively even fixture. Sheffield United have generally had the edge when they have been the stronger side in the division, which appears to be the case again here. Charlton have occasionally made The Valley a difficult place to visit, using their home crowd to grind out results when form elsewhere has been tough, but the current squad does not have that resilience right now. Four home games without a win heading into this one makes The Valley feel far less intimidating than it once did.
Sheffield United look like the bet here from almost every angle. They are defensively solid, in excellent form, and facing a Charlton side that cannot buy a goal. Jones needs a reaction from his players, but backing them to suddenly find their attacking touch against one of the tightest back fours in the Championship feels like wishful thinking. The value is with the away side, and probably in the low scoring, Sheffield United win territory.
Sheffield United have been grinding out wins rather than thrashing teams, and Charlton, for all their problems, do at least have some defensive organisation. A 1 to 0 away win feels like the most likely outcome here, Sheffield United doing just enough to take the points without it becoming a rout.
Charlton are going to be under pressure for large spells of this game, and when sides are chasing the game and frustrated, cards tend to follow. The home side’s midfielders will be working overtime trying to disrupt the Blades, and there is a reasonable chance of three or more bookings in total. Over 2.5 cards looks a decent shout.
Sheffield United’s defensive record is impressive, and Charlton have been desperately short of goals. This has the ingredients of a low scoring affair. Under 2.5 goals is the call, and you would not be shocked if it finished one nil or even goalless from Charlton’s end.
Sheffield United tend to dominate possession and push teams back when they are in this kind of form, and a Charlton side under siege for large parts of the game is likely to invite pressure. The Blades will be getting balls into the box regularly from wide areas through Chong and Donovan. Over 9.5 corners appeals, with Sheffield United likely to rack up the majority of them.
With Charlton averaging well under a goal per game across their recent run and Sheffield United keeping things tight at the back, this does not look like a both teams to score game at all. No on BTTS is the pick, and it would be no surprise whatsoever if Charlton fail to get on the scoresheet.
Sydie Peck has just bagged a hat trick and will be full of confidence going into the weekend. He is an energetic presence who gets into the box from midfield, and against a Charlton side who have been leaking goals, he has every chance of getting on the scoresheet again. Good value as a first goalscorer pick at what should be a reasonable price given he is not a recognised striker.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Sheffield United to Win |
| Both Teams To Score | No |
| Over 9.5 Corners | Yes |
Sheffield United winning without Charlton scoring fits perfectly with the form of both sides, and the corners market adds value given the Blades’ expected dominance of wide areas throughout the game.
Sheffield United are the better team right now, and that is not a close call. They are defensively disciplined, brimming with confidence after back to back wins, and they have match winners all over the pitch. Charlton simply have not been able to score goals, and facing a back four that has been one of the stingiest in the Championship this season is not the ideal circumstances for rediscovering their touch in front of goal.
Nathan Jones needs a result to keep the pressure off, but Wilder’s side look like a team that knows exactly what it is doing at the moment. Sheffield United to take the three points and head into the international break in the playoff places. Charlton 0 to 1 Sheffield United.
