Who do you think will win?

There is something genuinely compelling about a League One fixture where both teams are pulling in completely opposite directions on the table but still feel like they have everything to play for. Leyton Orient are scrapping to put some daylight between themselves and the drop zone. Cambridge United are chasing a playoff spot and daring to dream about back to back promotions. Neither side can afford to be sloppy, and that tension tends to make for a proper Saturday afternoon game.

What makes this one particularly interesting is the contrast in identity. Orient have kept things tight at the back and are leaning on their defensive solidity as a platform to build from. Cambridge have gone the other way entirely, throwing bodies forward and scoring goals at a rate that has surprised a fair few people in this division. Something has to give when these two approaches collide at Brisbane Road.

Leyton Orient vs Cambridge United Match Details

This League One fixture takes place at Brisbane Road, Orient’s compact east London ground which has seen its fair share of dramatic moments over the years. This is a home game that carries real weight for Richie Wellens and his side, who will see it as an opportunity to put back to back defeats firmly behind them and start building some momentum with their supporters behind them.

Team News

Orient head into this one without any fresh injury concerns from the Burton defeat, which at least gives Wellens some consistency in his selection. There are still a couple of absentees he has to plan around though.

  • Rarmani Edmonds-Green remains sidelined with an injury
  • Somto Boniface is also unavailable through injury
  • Jaze Kabia is fit and expected to lead the line after a solid start to his season
  • Dane Scarlett and Aaron Connolly are both options to support Kabia up front

Cambridge have a couple of interesting selection decisions to make after the Sheffield Wednesday draw on Tuesday. Shane McLoughlin and Callum Perry both returned from injury in that game, so Harris has options. The short turnaround could tempt him into rotating, particularly further forward where Louis Appere has only managed one goal in twelve appearances. Shayne Lavery grabbed an assist off the bench at Hillsborough and Sullay Kaikai scored, so both are pushing for starts.

Predicted Lineups

Wellens looks set to stick with what he knows given the lack of fresh injury news, and you can understand why. When your results are inconsistent, tinkering with a settled unit can do more harm than good. Kabia should lead the line with either Scarlett or Connolly alongside him, and the midfield looks likely to remain compact to offer protection to a back four that has actually been one of the better defensive units in the lower half of the division.

For Cambridge, Harris has a genuine selection headache up front. Appere has had chances and not taken them, and with Lavery showing well from the bench it would be no surprise to see him start. Kaikai scoring from the bench is the kind of thing that can force a manager’s hand too. Expect Knight to continue on the right side of attack, providing the width and energy that has been a real feature of Cambridge’s play this season.

  • Leyton Orient: Baxter; Stevens, Forrester, Gilchrist; C. Wellens, Gilbert, Hayden, El Mizouni, Morris; Scarlett, Kabia
  • Cambridge United: Eastwood; Bennett, Heffernan, Watts, Perry; Hoddle; Knight, Mpanzu, McLoughlin, Heath; Lavery

Recent Form

Leyton Orient’s season has been one of frustrating inconsistency. Fourteen points from twelve games is not catastrophic but it is not comfortable either, and two consecutive defeats have put a slight edge on things around Brisbane Road. The loss at Burton was particularly galling because they were in front at the break and looked like they were doing enough, only for second half goals to turn it around. Conceding in the 86th minute is the kind of thing that stays with a dressing room for a few days.

The positive to take from Orient’s numbers is that defensive record. Only fourteen goals conceded across twelve league games, and that is genuinely impressive for a team sitting in the lower half of the table. Wellens has clearly worked hard on making his side hard to beat, and on another day those numbers would suggest a team that is grinding out draws and nicking results rather than losing games. The problem has been at the other end, where they have not been clinical enough when chances have arrived.

Cambridge are the real story here though. Twenty one goals in thirteen matches for a side that most people expected to be battling near the bottom? That is an extraordinary return for a team making their first appearance at this level in recent memory. They drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday which stopped them moving into the top six, but they are only four points off the league leaders and that tells you everything about how well Neil Harris has got them organised. Nine goals in their last five matches shows the attacking threat has not been a one off burst either, this is a team with real firepower and genuine momentum.

Head-to-Head Record

The head to head record here is worth paying attention to because it leans strongly in Orient’s favour at this level. The last time these two met was back in April 2025, when the O’s recorded their fourth consecutive victory over Cambridge. You have to go all the way back to April 2021 to find a Cambridge win in this fixture, which was during a League Two encounter between the sides. That is a long wait for the visitors when it comes to getting one over on Orient.

History is not everything though, and Cambridge in October 2026 are a very different proposition to the side that has been getting beaten by Orient in recent years. They are organised, in form, and playing with a confidence that comes from genuinely overachieving so far this season. The record is a useful reference point but Harris will not be dwelling on it.

Key Stats

  • Leyton Orient have conceded just 14 goals in 12 League One games, one of the best records in the bottom half of the division
  • Cambridge United have scored 21 goals in 13 league matches, a tally bettered by only four sides in the entire division
  • Cambridge have an unbeaten away record in League One this season, which is a remarkable achievement for a newly promoted side

Leyton Orient vs Cambridge United Betting Tips

This is a fixture where the instinct is to back the home side based on history and the familiar comfort of Brisbane Road, but Cambridge’s form away from home this season demands serious respect. The visitors are clinical, confident and playing without any of the fear factor you might expect from a newly promoted outfit. Orient’s defensive record gives them a chance of keeping things tight, but stopping Cambridge scoring has been beyond most teams they have faced.

Corners Prediction

Cambridge will carry a threat from wide areas through Knight in particular, and Orient will likely look to hit them on the break rather than dominate possession. That kind of game tends to generate corners at both ends, and with two sides who will be pushing forward at key moments, going over on the corners line looks a sensible call here.

Correct Score Prediction

Orient have the defensive platform to stay in this and Kabia could well threaten, but Cambridge’s firepower and that unbeaten away record feels like it tips the balance. A 1-2 to the visitors feels right, with Orient grabbing one but ultimately coming up short against a Cambridge side that keeps finding ways to score goals on the road.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Shayne Lavery is the pick here. He came off the bench and provided an assist in the Sheffield Wednesday draw, he is pushing hard for a start, and he is the kind of striker who thrives when given the opportunity to prove himself. If Harris does hand him the nod from the off, Lavery looks sharp enough to punish an Orient defence that has actually held firm in most games this season.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes. Orient have Kabia in decent touch and the home crowd will drive them forward, while Cambridge have scored in virtually every game they have played this season. Both defences will have questions to answer, and the quality of the attacking threats on show makes both teams scoring the most likely outcome.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Over 2.5 goals. Cambridge are averaging well over a goal and a half per game on their own, and Orient will need to come forward if they fall behind. Add in the home desperation for a positive result and a Cambridge side that is not short of confidence in front of goal, and this has the look of a match that will deliver on the scoring front.

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
Over 2.5 Goals Over
First Goalscorer Shayne Lavery

Cambridge’s attacking output and Orient’s need to chase the game make goals on both sides almost inevitable, and Lavery looks perfectly placed to get in on the action early if he gets his start.

Final Match Prediction

Leyton Orient have the defensive nous to make this uncomfortable for Cambridge and Brisbane Road can be a difficult place to go when the crowd gets behind the home side. But Cambridge United have been the real surprise package of this League One season so far, and their form away from home in particular sets them apart from most newly promoted sides.

Orient will give this a real go and Kabia will threaten, but Cambridge have too much firepower and too much confidence to leave empty handed. A 1-2 Cambridge win feels like the right call, with the visitors edging a competitive contest and continuing their push toward the playoff places.
