Rennes
LilleThere is a real edge to this one. Rennes against Lille is never a nothing fixture in Ligue 1, but right now both clubs are carrying very different kinds of pressure into Roazhon Park. Rennes started the season like a side with a point to prove, shot up to joint top of the table and then promptly went quiet. Lille have done the opposite, quietly building an 18 point haul and parking themselves right behind PSG while barely anyone outside of France has noticed. Chuck in the fact that Rennes have not beaten Lille on home soil since 2019, and suddenly this has genuine intrigue beyond the standings.
What makes the matchup particularly compelling is the contrast in styles. Rennes want to push forward, have pace in the final third, and can score goals when things are clicking. Lille just do not concede. Five clean sheets in nine league games, the fewest goals let in across the top three divisions in France. Something has to give on Sunday afternoon, and working out which way that tension snaps is exactly what makes previewing this one so enjoyable.
The game takes place at Roazhon Park in Rennes, the home of Les Rouge et Noir, as part of matchday 10 in the 2026/27 Ligue 1 season. It is a fixture with real implications at both ends of the table, with Lille looking to keep the pressure on leaders PSG and Rennes desperately needing a win to avoid slipping further off the pace after a difficult run of form.
Rennes have a couple of selection concerns heading into this one, though there is at least some positive news on the injury front. Lille travel with a slightly cleaner bill of health, though they are without a few familiar faces.
Franck Haise looks likely to set Rennes up with a back five, with Samba returning in goal behind Reynolds, Ait Boudlal, Cresswell, Rouault and Nagida. Thomasson, Rongier and Camara should form the midfield trio, with Dia leading the attack alongside Tamari. Lepaul may be on the bench at best.
Davide Ancelotti has a slight dilemma up front given the doubt over Ueda, but Haraldsson looks the most likely option through the middle if Ueda does not make it. The back four should feature Nianzou back alongside Alexsandro, with Ngoy and Perraud as fullbacks and Ozer in goal. Mukau, Kjaergaard and Andre in midfield, with Mnappe and Diaoune supporting Haraldsson in attack.
Rennes began the season in genuinely impressive fashion. Three wins from their opening four league games had them sitting joint top in mid September and looking like genuine title contenders. Since then the wheels have wobbled. Just six points from five league games, one win across all competitions in that same stretch, and a 5-2 hammering away at Nice in their last outing. That is a result that stings no matter how you frame it, and Haise will know his side need a response here.
Their Europa League campaign has not offered much relief either. Three draws from four group stage fixtures leaves them sitting in 17th, which is not where a club of Rennes’ ambitions expects to be. There is a sense that the opening burst of form papered over some structural issues, and those problems are now surfacing with more regularity.
Lille’s form by contrast has been quietly outstanding in Ligue 1. Eighteen points from nine games, only one defeat and that came away at Nice, the same side that just put five past Rennes. The Champions League is a mess, admittedly. A goalless draw with Bodo/Glimt midweek is their first point in the competition, leaving them second from bottom in the group. But domestically Ancelotti has this team extremely well organised. They win games without taking risks, they keep clean sheets for fun, and they are picking up points consistently enough to genuinely push PSG for the title.
This is where it gets really uncomfortable for Rennes. They have not won at Roazhon Park against Lille since the final day of the 2018/19 season, a 3-1 victory that feels like a very long time ago now. In the seven meetings since on home soil, Rennes have come away with nothing, and Lille secured a 2-1 win when they made the trip back in March of this season. That is a mental burden as much as a statistical one.
Lille have won three of the previous four meetings between the sides overall. They know how to handle Rennes, they know how to grind out results in this stadium, and that experience and confidence will count for something come Sunday afternoon.
Looking at this fixture honestly, it is very hard to make a case for Rennes to get the result their home fans are crying out for. They have dropped form at exactly the wrong time, their recent record against this opponent on their own patch is dreadful, and they are facing a Lille side who defend better than anyone in France right now. The away win has to be the starting point for any bet builder, and there are a few supporting markets that fit neatly alongside it.
Lille’s defensive organisation makes this feel like a low scoring game, and a 1-0 away win makes a lot of sense. Rennes do have attacking quality and Dia has been in decent touch, but Lille have the defensive structure to keep them at bay for 90 minutes, as they have done to plenty of better sides this season.
No. Lille’s clean sheet numbers are not a fluke and their defensive record speaks for itself. Rennes have goals in them when they are firing, but they are not firing right now, and Lille at the back is about as difficult an assignment as you will find in Ligue 1 this season. Back Lille to keep another clean sheet here.
This fixture has a competitive edge and Rennes will be wound up after a poor run of results in front of their own supporters. A side that is frustrated, chasing a game against a team happy to sit deep and play on the counter, is a recipe for bookings. Expect over three cards in this one, with Rennes players the most likely candidates as the pressure mounts in the second half.
Boulaye Dia is the standout pick here. He has shouldered the attacking responsibility in Lepaul’s absence and responded with goals, netting three times in his last four appearances. He is the focal point of Rennes’ attack, he will want to make a statement in a big home game, and at the price available on first goalscorer markets, he represents decent value.

A frustrated Rennes chasing a game against Lille’s watertight defence sets up perfectly for all three of these selections to land together.
Rennes need this win badly, and their supporters will be desperate for a reaction after the Nice humiliation. But wanting it and getting it are very different things, particularly when the visitors are as well drilled and defensively assured as Lille are right now. Ancelotti’s side have beaten Rennes at this ground before, they know how to manage these occasions, and they have too much quality and structure to be beaten by a Rennes side this low on confidence.
Lille to grind out a 1-0 win, extend their unbeaten run in Ligue 1, and go into the international break breathing right down PSG’s neck. Rennes, meanwhile, will have some serious questions to answer about where this season is heading. Predicted score: Rennes 0-1 Lille.
