Rio Ave
BragaRio Ave are in serious trouble. Sitting 16th in the Primeira Liga with just two league wins to their name and a defensive record that is genuinely alarming, Vasco Seabra needs a result at home this weekend or the pressure is going to become suffocating. Braga, meanwhile, are trying to rebuild some momentum under a new manager and finally look like a side that knows what it wants to be again. This is a fixture that matters for very different reasons on either side of the touchline.
For Braga, this is about proving that the 3-0 win over Famalicao last weekend was not a one-off. Franclim Carvalho has steadied the ship after Carlos Vicens was shown the door in mid-October, but eighth in the table is nowhere near where the Archbishops expected to be at this point in the season. A trip to a struggling side is exactly the kind of game they need to be winning.
This Primeira Liga fixture takes place at the Estadio dos Arcos in Vila do Conde. Rio Ave are the hosts but have been deeply unconvincing on their own patch this season, while Braga travel north looking to build on a week that has at least shown signs of defensive solidity under their new gaffer.
Both sides head into this one with selection concerns, though Braga’s issues are arguably more manageable given the quality they have available across the squad.
Enner Van der Gouw is likely to continue in goal for Rio Ave after being preferred to Vitor Hugo last time out. Seabra is light on options in a couple of areas given the Ntoi suspension, so there may be a reshuffle in midfield. Miguel Patricio scored last weekend and should keep his place in attack.
Rio Ave expected XI: Van der Gouw; Tome, Pertasso, Mancha, Vrousai; Nascimento, Liavas; Clemmensen, Patricio, Bezerra; Blesa
Carvalho looks set to stick with the structure that worked well against Famalicao. Arrey-Mbi’s return is a boost at the back, and the Braga boss will want to keep the defensive tightness they have shown across their last two outings.
Braga expected XI: Bernardo; Gomez, Lagerbielke, Barcia, Travassos; Gorby, Dorgeles, Moutinho; G Martinez, P Victor, Horta
Rio Ave’s form under Seabra makes for uncomfortable reading. He came in with the club struggling and his first game brought a morale-boosting 3-2 win over Nacional, but things have gone downhill quickly since. A 4-0 hammering at the hands of Famalicao was bad enough, but then losing 2-1 to Academico de Viseu at the weekend, even after going ahead through Patricio, shows just how fragile this side is. The bigger story though is the defensive numbers. Twenty-three league goals conceded already, at least four more than any other team in the division. They have shipped multiple goals in every single home league game this season. That is not just a bad run, that is a structural problem.
Braga’s campaign has been a stop-start affair and the sacking of Vicens was a signal that patience ran out quickly. But Carvalho has at least brought some stability in a short space of time. The 3-0 win over Famalicao was his first top-flight victory in charge, following an earlier win against Gent in the Conference League. The midweek goalless draw away to Aarhus extended their run to two consecutive clean sheets across all competitions, which is a decent foundation to build on. The concern is their away form, where they have failed to score in each of their last five matches on the road across all competitions. That is a worry, but facing a Rio Ave side leaking goals at this rate changes the equation somewhat.
Braga have also been relatively wasteful in front of goal. Only Gil Vicente have scored fewer than the Archbishops’ 12 league goals among sides currently in the top half of the table. Twenty-six shots in Denmark midweek and nothing to show for it tells you the finishing has not been clinical enough. But the talent is in there, and a generous Rio Ave defence could unlock something.
Rio Ave can point to their recent home record against Braga as a genuine reason for optimism. They have gone unbeaten in each of the last three meetings at the Estadio dos Arcos, including a 2-1 win when the sides last faced each other in Vila do Conde back in March 2025. The most recent encounter at the venue ended 2-2. That sequence suggests Rio Ave are capable of making Braga uncomfortable at home, even when their overall form is poor.
That said, the broader picture has changed. Rio Ave conceding 23 league goals this season is a completely different animal to previous campaigns. Their defensive frailty now is at a level that makes historical home results less relevant than they might otherwise be.
The temptation is to pile on Braga to win and cover this by a couple of goals, but their away form gives genuine reason for caution. The smarter angle here is to work with what the numbers are screaming at you: Rio Ave’s defence is a sieve, and even a Braga attack that has been misfiring on the road should find a way through sooner or later. Goals are coming in this one, and Braga’s defensive improvement under Carvalho means there is a decent chance this stays relatively controlled.
Rio Ave are under pressure and playing in front of their own fans, which often means more aggression and frustration when things go wrong. With Ntoi already suspended after last weekend’s red card, the squad discipline is already a concern. Expect at least three bookings in this one as the home side chase the game.
Over 2.5 goals looks well worth backing here. Rio Ave have shipped multiple goals in every home league game this season, and even a Braga side struggling for goals on the road should find the net against this backline. The hosts also have enough of an attacking threat to cause problems, so goals from both ends feel likely.
Ricardo Horta is the pick here. The experienced Braga forward brings quality and experience in the final third, and with the visitors likely to dominate possession in the second half as Rio Ave tire, Horta should get his opportunities. He found the net regularly before this season and looks due a league goal.
Over 9.5 corners is a reasonable call. Braga like to work the wide areas and get crosses into the box, and against a low-block Rio Ave side who may well sit deep to protect what they have, expect plenty of set piece situations. The hosts will also look to get forward on the counter, adding to the corner count at the other end.
Yes lands here. Rio Ave have scored in several recent outings despite their struggles, and Patricio got on the scoresheet last weekend. Braga’s defence has looked better recently but they are not an impenetrable wall, and the hosts will have their moments. BTTS yes is backed by both sides showing enough of a threat in front of goal.
Braga to win 2-1 feels right. The visitors have enough quality to get the job done against a leaky Rio Ave backline, but the hosts’ recent head-to-head record at home and their own attacking threat through Patricio suggest this will not be a walkover. A narrow Braga win with both sides finding the net captures the most likely outcome.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| Over 2.5 Goals | Over |
| Match Result | Braga to Win |
Rio Ave’s defensive record makes goals almost inevitable, BTTS yes complements the over 2.5 line nicely, and Braga winning ties the whole thing together given their recent upturn and the quality gap between the sides right now.
Braga are not the finished article under Carvalho, not by a long stretch. But they are facing a Rio Ave side that is genuinely struggling to keep goals out and whose confidence is fragile after back-to-back league defeats. The Archbishops have the quality in their squad to get this done, even if their away form has been poor, and the sheer volume of goals Rio Ave have been conceding makes it very hard to back against Braga finding the net at some point.
Rio Ave will cause problems on the break and have shown enough in recent weeks to suggest they will not go quietly, but Braga are the more organised side right now and that defensive improvement under the new manager should prove decisive. Braga to win 2-1.
