The USPGA Tour continues this week in California and a very strong field will contend the ZoZo Championship which was originally scheduled to take place in Japan. The tournament is staged from Thursday 22-25th October at the Sherwood Country Club a familiar course for many of the US Tour stars who have featured in the Hero World Challenge.
Sherwood is a par 72 parkland course of 7022 yards with tree-lined fairways overlooked by the Santa Monica mountain range which favours accuracy from the tee and the ability to shape a lot of shots as the course features a few dogleg holes. All of the par 5’s here are reachable in two.
Many of the top players including Justin Thomas, Rory Mcllroy and Jon Rahm are competing as they continue their preparation for the US Masters in November. Many of the players who played in last week’s CJ Cup will make the short trip from Vegas including the above trio who all feature towards the top of the online bookies fancied contenders.
Thomas seems slightly off his best at the moment and a closing 74 at Shadow Creek means we are happy to avoid him at odds of just 12/1 . Mcllroy also finished with a 74 to finish outside the Top 20 and is another to avoid at short odds this week whilst Rahm generally the bookies favourite at 10/1 is just too short in a field of this depth and quality.
For the main Zozo Championship tip however, look no further than Englishman Tyrell Hatton who finished like a train last week and is in the form of his life after winning the BMW Championship at Wentworth 10 days ago. A closing 7 under par 65 saw Hatton finish third in the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek and he is a value bet this weekend at odds of 20/1 with William Hill offering ⅕ odds for 7 places.
Tiger Woods will be back to defend his Zozo Championship title this week having won this tournament last year when it was held in Japan and it’s worth noting that if Tiger does win this event, it’ll be a record-breaking 83rd Tour Victory. Of course, Tiger also has great form at Sherwood Country Club having won the Hero World Challenge an amazing five times between 2001 and 2011. However, Tiger hasn’t shown any form so far this year and can not be fancied even at odds of 33/1.
Last week’s winner Jason Kokrak is now ranked world number 26 and is worth a small each way bet at odds of 45/1 that he can maintain the outstanding form he showed at Shadow Creek coming from way off the pace with a final round of 64. Prior to the CJ Cup win, Kokrak also showed good form with a sixth-place finish at the US BMW Championship and tied for 17th at the US Open.
Small stakes advised this week as this is a new venue for this particular tournament and many of the top players are proving a little inconsistent at this moment.
