Back in 2010, Bournemouth were playing football in League Two but have managed to climb their way to the top of the English football leagues with much of the credit going to ex-manager Eddie Howe.
Howe took Bournemouth from League One, all the way to the Premier League and managed to keep them there for five consecutive seasons before they were relegated to the Championship. Their highest finish in the Premier League was 9th back in 2016/17 but they have mostly struggled in the top-flight and it once again seems the case this season following their return to England’s top league last year.
Andoni Iraola then took the club to new heights in recent years, finishing 6th in the Premier League in 2025/26 and securing the club’s first-ever European qualification. German manager Marco Rose is taking over ahead of the 2026/2027 season and he has big shoes to fill.
Andoni Iraola took over in June 2023 as AFC Bournemouth manager, replacing the sacked Gary O’Neil. While it took until late October for the side to get their first win under Iraola in their first season, they finished 12th, which was a then-club record in top-flight football.
Season two was even better, with a ninth-place finish with 56 points. Then in Iraola’s third and final season, he guided the Cherries to a 6th-place finish and secured the club’s first-ever European qualification. There was an 18-game unbeaten run thrown into the mix. While they missed out on Champions League football on the final day, they made it into the Europa League for the first time.
Iraola revealed in April that he wouldn’t be signing a contract extension. He’s reportedly had links to clubs like Manchester United, Tottenham, and AC Milan, but it remains to be seen where he will end up.
Andoni Iraola will be a hard act to follow, setting the bar extremely high with a 6th-place finish and European qualification.
Marco Rose is now taking over the club on a three-year deal. He’ll officially take over during the summer, with the German not working since being sacked by RB Leipzig in 2025.
However, he has a strong CV after strong spells in Germany with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig. He also won a title in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg. The challenge is sizable, with Rose looking to stave off summer interest for some of Bournemouth’s best players.
