• Back big, galloping horses: Newbury is wide and galloping, and it suits long-striding horses. There are few hard-luck stories, so the best horse usually wins.
• Don't worry too much about the draw: Jason Weaver says there's very little draw bias on the straight course. The one draw-dependent start is the round mile, which starts in the spur.
• Watch the centre of the straight: Most of the action is on the stands' rail, but horses coming down the middle can sometimes gain an advantage.

Newbury Race Course Guide

Newbury's Flat course is a left-handed oval of about a mile and six furlongs. A straight mile, which undulates throughout, joins the round course to form a five-furlong home straight.

The jumps course is about a mile and five furlongs round, with eleven fences, including two open ditches and a water jump. It has two long straights and two sweeping bends.

The back straight can ride softer than the home straight, probably because of the woodland on the far side.

Draw and Going at Newbury

There's very little draw bias on Newbury's straight course, so the draw rarely decides races. On the round mile, which starts in the spur, a good draw is more important.

The ground is generally excellent, and it's usually good or good to firm on the Flat. Heavy rain can make it testing, especially over jumps. Check the going on the morning of racing.

Big Races at Newbury

On the Flat, the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes in May is Newbury's biggest race. In 2026, Notable Speech won it as the 2/1 favourite for Charlie Appleby and William Buick.

Other big Flat races include the Greenham Stakes in April, the Weatherbys Super Sprint in July, the Geoffrey Freer Stakes in August and the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes in September.

Over jumps, the Coral Gold Cup, formerly the Hennessy, is one of the biggest handicap chases of the season. Panic Attack won it in 2025 at 16/1 for Dan Skelton and Tristan Durrell.

The Betfair Hurdle in February is one of the most valuable handicap hurdles of the season. The card also features the Game Spirit Chase and Denman Chase, both Cheltenham trials.

History of Newbury Racecourse

Racing in Newbury dates back to 1805, but the present course opened on 26–27 September 1905. Kingsclere trainer John Porter proposed it, and the story goes that King Edward VII backed the idea.

The course was a prisoner-of-war camp in the First World War and was occupied by the American Army in the Second. Racing resumed in April 1949.

Queen Elizabeth II was a regular visitor, and she celebrated her 86th birthday at the course in 2012.
