Who do you think will win?

Fabio Celestini could not have asked for a more daunting first assignment. Walking into Turf Moor with Burnley sitting 22nd in the Championship, three points from safety, and carrying the Championship’s joint worst defensive record, the Swiss coach faces an immediate test of what he is about. The pressure is real. The stakes could not be higher. A club of Burnley’s size should not be fighting relegation in the second tier, and everyone inside Turf Moor knows it.

Portsmouth arrive as a side with genuine momentum and a defensive structure that has been making life very difficult for opponents on the road. This is not the kind of fixture a new manager dreams of for his debut. But football does not care about timing, and Celestini will have to hit the ground running.

Burnley vs Portsmouth Match Details

This Championship fixture takes place at Turf Moor in Burnley, with the Clarets hosting Portsmouth in what could prove to be a pivotal moment in their season. Burnley’s desperate need for points at home makes this one of the more significant fixtures in their calendar this autumn, and the atmosphere inside the ground will reflect just how much is riding on the result.

Team News

Burnley are dealing with an injury list that would test any manager, let alone one preparing for his first game in charge. Celestini has significant numbers missing and a few more serious doubts to navigate before he can name his starting eleven.

  • Bashir Humphreys, Jordan Beyer, Zeki Amdouni, Hannibal, Aaron Ramsey and Jacob Bruun Larsen are all ruled out
  • Jamie Vardy is a doubt after missing the Lincoln defeat
  • Kyle Walker and Armando Broja both need assessing after picking up knocks against Lincoln
  • Josh Cullen and Jaydon Banel have been playing for the Under 21s and could be closing in on a return, but are unlikely to be risked from the start

Portsmouth are also dealing with a lengthy absentee list of their own. Benjamin Arthur, Connor Ogilvie, Mark Kosznovszky, John Swift, Keshi Anderson and Luke Brooke Smith are all out. Striker Colby Bishop faces a spell on the sidelines after his knee injury turned out to be more serious than first feared. There is a chance Conor Shaughnessy and Josh Murphy could come back into the squad, which would give John Mousinho a couple of welcome options from the bench.

Predicted Lineups

Celestini looks likely to go with the players available to him and try to impose some defensive organisation on a back line that has been shipping goals at an alarming rate. With so many options unavailable, there is not a great deal of room to be creative with selection. Expect something close to:

  • Burnley: Coudert; Roberts, Ekdal, Igor, Pires; Alleyne, Hatate; Edwards, Laurent, Ramazani; Hountondji

Mousinho will look to keep the shape that has been working well in recent weeks. With Colby Bishop out, Pompey will need their wide players and midfielders to contribute in the final third. Their expected lineup looks like this:

  • Portsmouth: Schmid; Swanson, Poole, Dia, Meghoma; Pack, Mohamed; Kamara, Segecic, Kavuma McQueen; Marezi

Recent Form

Burnley’s form has been dismal by any measure. One win, five draws and six defeats from their opening 12 league games is simply not good enough for a club that was playing Premier League football not so long ago. Nicky Hayen paid the price after that 4 1 thrashing at Lincoln, a result that summed up everything that has been going wrong. Twenty five goals conceded in 12 games is a disaster at this level. Celestini’s first job is obvious: stop the bleeding at the back.

At home specifically, the picture is even grimmer. Burnley have not won a single home league game this season, drawing four and losing two of their six at Turf Moor. You have to go back to October last year and a 2 0 win over Leeds United to find the last time they won at home in the league. That is 21 consecutive home league games without a victory. The crowd will be desperate for something to cheer, but patience inside those stands is running very thin.

Portsmouth, by contrast, are in a confident place. After a difficult start that saw them lose three of their first four games, Pompey have found their feet in a big way. A four game unbeaten run includes wins over Sheffield United and Norwich City as well as a point from a 1 1 draw at Wolves, which is no disgrace at all. Thomas Waddingham’s winner against Millwall last time out sent them to within two points of the playoff spots. They are a side that knows how to grind results out, and their away defensive record of just five goals conceded in six road trips is the best in the division alongside one other side.

Head-to-Head Record

Looking back at recent meetings between these two sides, Portsmouth have a reasonably respectable record against Burnley away from home. They have lost just one of their last eight away league games against the Clarets, though that one defeat is significant because it came on their most recent visit to Turf Moor back in September 2024. So while the overall record suggests Pompey can handle themselves in Lancashire, Burnley did manage to beat them last time these sides met at this ground.

The history here does not give either side an overwhelming edge, which is about what you would expect from two clubs that have bounced between the top two divisions over the years. What the record does tell you is that Portsmouth tend to make these trips competitive rather than rolling over.

Key Stats

  • Burnley have not won at home in the league for 21 consecutive games, a run stretching back to October 2025
  • Portsmouth have conceded just five goals in six away Championship games this season, the joint best defensive record on the road in the division
  • Pompey have failed to score more than one goal in each of their last five away league fixtures

Burnley vs Portsmouth Betting Tips

This game has low scoring draw written all over it. A new Burnley manager getting his first taste of life at Turf Moor against a Portsmouth side that absolutely knows how to keep things tight on the road. Celestini will want to shore things up defensively first and foremost, and Mousinho will be happy to take a point from a ground where his side lost last season. The goals markets and the draw are where the value lies here.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Warhorse Larmar Ramazani on the left side for Burnley is worth a look. He is one of the more direct and dangerous players the Clarets have available given the injury situation, and with a new manager likely to want his wide men causing problems early on to lift the crowd, Ramazani could well be the one to break the deadlock if Burnley do find a way through.

Corners Prediction

Under 9.5 corners appeals here. Portsmouth keep things compact and disciplined on the road and do not tend to invite pressure unnecessarily. Burnley, struggling for fluency and confidence, are unlikely to pepper the box with crosses and set pieces in the way a free flowing side might. This shapes up as a tight, scrappy affair where corners are not flying in at either end.

Cards Prediction

Over 3.5 cards looks reasonable. The pressure on Burnley players is enormous, and with a new manager demanding more intensity and commitment, you would expect a few crunching challenges early doors. Portsmouth are no strangers to being physical on the road either. A feisty Championship scrap with a card or four feels likely.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Under 2.5 goals is the call. Portsmouth’s away defensive record is outstanding and Burnley, for all their attacking intent under a new boss, have been misfiring all season. The Clarets’ firepower is limited by injuries, and Pompey’s back four is well drilled. Two goals or fewer feels very likely.

Correct Score Prediction

A 1 1 draw feels like the most probable outcome. Burnley will get a lift from the crowd and the new manager bounce could give them enough to score, but Portsmouth’s resilience on the road means they will not be rolled over. Both sides nicking a goal and sharing the spoils makes complete sense given everything we know about these two right now.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Draw
Total Goals Under 2.5
Total Cards Over 3.5

A tight, competitive draw with few goals but plenty of edge and card threat is exactly the kind of game these two sides are likely to produce this weekend.

Final Match Prediction

Fabio Celestini will get a bump in energy and effort from his squad, that much you can almost guarantee. New managers rarely see their first game go completely flat. But Burnley’s problems are deep rooted and one team talk cannot fix a leaky defence or paper over a thin squad. Portsmouth are simply too well organised on the road to be beaten by a side this low on confidence.

A 1 1 draw feels right. Celestini gets a point, the crowd goes home half satisfied, and Mousinho takes what is a perfectly acceptable result given the circumstances. Both sides move on having avoided defeat, which for very different reasons is probably what each of them needed.
