Real Betis
MalagaReal Betis have been one of the more impressive sides in La Liga this season, but there is a slight wobble starting to show. Six wins from ten league games is a genuinely solid return, and fifth in the Champions League table after three matches tells you Pellegrini has built something with real quality. The problem is that one point from the last two league games, a 5-2 hammering at the hands of Barcelona followed by a flat goalless draw with Celta Vigo, has softened the momentum a touch. They need a performance here, and on paper, a home tie against the bottom club in the division is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Malaga arrive in Seville with precisely zero league wins to their name. The promoted side have drawn five and lost five of their ten La Liga outings, which puts them rooted to the foot of the table on five points. They did manage a 3-0 Copa del Rey win over Alcazar in midweek, but cup form against lower opposition does not always carry over, and stepping into the Estadio Benito Villamarin on the back of a difficult season is a very different proposition.
This La Liga fixture takes place at the Estadio Benito Villamarin in Seville, with Betis looking to consolidate their fourth place standing and cut into the gap to the top three. For Malaga, a newly promoted side still searching for that elusive first top flight win of the campaign, this represents a genuinely difficult assignment against a side who are also preparing for European football next week away to Borussia Dortmund.
Pellegrini has a few selection headaches to deal with, though the squad depth at Betis means the options are still plentiful. For Malaga, the injury list is considerably longer and will stretch their resources even further.
Pellegrini is expected to freshen things up after the Celta draw, with Pablo Fornals and Troy Parrott pushing for starts. Isco should keep his spot in the number ten role, and Antony is expected to operate on the right flank. The back line of Ortiz, Llorente, Natan and Gomez looks likely to stay intact.
Real Betis: Valles; Ortiz, Llorente, Natan, Gomez; Fornals, Ceballos; Antony, Isco, Ezzalzouli; Parrott
Malaga boss Juan Francisco Funes will be working with a severely depleted squad. Chupe impressed with two goals off the bench in the Copa del Rey and should come back into the starting eleven, alongside Adrian Nino through the middle. Nino has four league goals in six appearances this season and is Malaga’s main attacking threat.
Malaga: Herrero; Puga, Recio, Galilea, Rafita; Enriquez; Larrubia, Dotor, Lorenzo, Chupe; Nino
Betis have genuinely impressed across the first chunk of the season. Six wins and nine points in the Champions League group stages speaks to a side with real quality and tactical organisation under Pellegrini. In La Liga the record of six wins, two draws and two defeats is good enough to sit four points clear of fifth place, and the underlying performances have mostly been strong. The worry is that recent blip. Conceding five against Barcelona is one thing, that is a very good side who will batter most teams on their day, but a goalless home draw with Celta suggests the sharpness in the final third has dropped off slightly.
Malaga have had a brutal return to the top flight. Five draws and five defeats across ten games is not the kind of start that fills a fanbase with confidence, and the gap between life in the Segunda and surviving at this level is starting to show. The 1-1 draw with Alaves last time out was a point, and they will take whatever crumbs they can get right now, but they have not won a single league game and they are going to need to find something quickly or this could become a very long season. The Copa del Rey win over Alcazar showed they have players who can contribute when the opposition allows them space, but Betis at home is a completely different environment.
The historical record between these two clubs tells a very clear story. Betis lead the overall head to head 11 wins to eight across 26 meetings in all competitions, with seven draws in between. More strikingly, Malaga have lost four of the last four matches between the sides, and have only beaten Betis once in their last six encounters. That solitary win came all the way back in March 2016, which means an entire decade has passed without Malaga getting the better of their Andalusian rivals.
At the Benito Villamarin, Malaga are going to find it extremely tough to break that run. Home advantage has been a real factor in this fixture historically, and with Betis needing a response after back to back unconvincing results, the hosts will be up for this one from the first whistle.
This fixture sets up well for backing Betis to bounce back. A home side with Champions League pedigree, fourth in La Liga, facing a winless promoted club who are short of fit players and miles off the pace. Pellegrini will want a statement result before heading to Dortmund next week, which means the intensity should be high from the off. The real question is not whether Betis win, but by how much and where the value sits in the markets.
Malaga have been grinding out draws and will likely set up to frustrate here, which usually means bodies behind the ball and a willingness to put in a tackle. Against a Betis side with creative players moving into tight spaces, that combination tends to produce a few bookings. Expect at least three cards in this one, with Malaga’s midfield and defensive unit most likely to pick them up.
Troy Parrott is the name to be on here. Expected to come into the starting lineup after being left out against Celta, the Irish striker will be fresh, motivated and facing a Malaga defence that has conceded in each of their last several away trips. Parrott leading the line for a Betis side looking to press high and get forward quickly is a nice spot for the first goalscorer market.
A 3-0 home win looks the most likely outcome to me. Betis have enough firepower across the pitch to pick off a Malaga side who are missing six players and struggling for confidence, and keeping a clean sheet against an attack that has failed to win any league game all season feels very achievable for Pellegrini’s well organised backline.
Betis play with width and regularly get their fullbacks and wide men in behind, which generates a lot of corner situations. Against a deep sitting Malaga side who will invite pressure, the hosts could easily rack up eight or more corners on their own. Back over 9.5 corners for the match as a confident selection.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Match Result | Real Betis to Win |
| First Goalscorer | Troy Parrott |
| Total Corners | Over 9.5 |
Betis winning at home with Parrott on the scoresheet and the corner count running high all point in the same direction, a dominant home performance with plenty of attacking intent from the first whistle.
Betis to win 3-0. Pellegrini will want an emphatic response after two underwhelming results, and the Europa League, sorry, Champions League commitments make it even more important to pick up three comfortable points here before the trip to Dortmund. The squad depth, the home advantage and a decade without a Malaga victory at this ground all point firmly in one direction.
Malaga will work hard and Adrian Nino will cause problems on the counter, but the gap in quality between these two sides right now is significant. Betis should have too much in every department, and on a night when they are hungry to prove a point, the promoted visitors are likely to get on the wrong end of a convincing scoreline.
