Como
VeneziaFour wins on the spin, twelve goals scored, three conceded. That is the kind of form that gets a football fan genuinely excited, and right now Como are playing some of the best football in Serie A. Cesc Fabregas has built something real at Stadio Sinigaglia, and the Lariani are not just competing, they are genuinely threatening to gateccrash the Scudetto conversation. Standing in their way this weekend is a Venezia side that has managed just three points all season and looks like a team already bracing itself for life back in Serie B.
The contrast in trajectories here could hardly be more stark. Como are sitting fourth in Serie A, just above AC Milan, and only Inter and the two Rome clubs are above them. Venezia are propping up the entire division with eight defeats from nine games and a goal conceding rate that would make any manager wince. On paper this looks like a mismatch, and the numbers suggest it probably is.
This Serie A fixture takes place at Stadio Sinigaglia, Como’s compact lakeside ground that has become something of a fortress under Fabregas. It is a ground that buzzes when the home side are in form, and with Como riding a wave of momentum right now, the atmosphere should be electric. Venezia make the trip from the lagoon needing a minor miracle just to take anything from this one.
Como have a few injury concerns to manage despite their strong form, and Fabregas will need to shuffle his pack carefully given the relentless fixture schedule. The good news is that his squad has enough quality to absorb a few changes.
Fabregas named a strong side in Turin in midweek so there is a reasonable chance he rotates a little here, particularly with some fringe options unavailable. Even a rotated Como XI carries serious threat throughout, and the manager will still want to keep the momentum going against the division’s weakest side.
Como are expected to line up with Butez in goal, a back four of Smolcic, Ramon, Kambwala and Kaiki, Milla and Ricci in central midfield, with Da Cunha, Paz and Baturina supplying Douvikas up front. Venezia are likely to set up with Stankovic behind a back three of Halhal, Moreno and Jesus, with Hainaut, Perez, Busio, Sohm and Haps in midfield, and Adams partnered by either Yeboah or Lauerbach up top.
Como’s run of four straight wins has been built on goals, energy and a level of individual quality that you simply do not expect from a side that was in Serie B not that long ago. They beat Fiorentina and Sassuolo in Serie A, sandwiched a historic Champions League win over Manchester United, and then came from behind to beat Torino in midweek. That Torino result was particularly impressive because they showed real character after Jacobo Ramon’s error gifted the opener. Ramon then headed home the equaliser on 81 minutes before Nico Paz and Martin Baturina wrapped it up. That is a team with confidence running through every line.
Venezia’s recent run makes for genuinely grim reading. Eight defeats from nine Serie A games, three points on the board, and a squad that looks short of the quality needed to survive at this level. They have scored just six times in the league and concede at a rate of more than two goals per game. Survival specialist Davide Nicola took charge after Giovanni Stroppa was moved on, and his new side did shock Napoli on his debut. But normal service returned quickly, with a 1 0 defeat to Genoa followed by a midweek loss to Inter where two late own goals condemned them despite showing genuine spirit. They pushed the champions hard but the final scoreline did not reflect how cruel the finish was.
The gap in form and quality between these two sides is genuinely significant. Como have scored twelve goals in their last four games. Venezia have scored six in their last nine. The Lariani’s attack is playing with freedom and invention, while Venezia’s defence has been leaking goals week after week regardless of the opposition.
These two clubs do not have a lengthy recent history of top flight meetings given both have spent time outside Serie A in the past decade or so. What is relevant here though is venue. Venezia have not picked up a single point away from home in Serie A this season. Zero. Every road trip has ended in defeat, and that tells you everything you need to know about how this side travel. At Stadio Penzo they have at least offered some resistance, pushing Inter right to the end in midweek. Away from home they have looked a completely different proposition.
The overall picture here points heavily towards Como. They are in brilliant form, playing at home, and facing the worst away side in the division. Even with rotation and a few injuries, the quality Fabregas has at his disposal should be too much for a Venezia backline that has been shipping goals all season. The main questions for the betting markets are around the margin and whether Venezia can nick a goal of their own.
Venezia have scored just six times all season and have looked particularly toothless on the road. With Como’s defence having conceded only three times in their last four games and clearly well organised under Fabregas, the signs point toward Como keeping a clean sheet here. No on BTTS feels like the right call.
Como generate a lot of attacking play and tend to pin teams back when they are in form. Venezia will spend large portions of this game defending deep, which should create plenty of opportunities for Como to earn set pieces and corners. Over 9.5 corners looks well within reach given the likely dynamic of this match.
Como came from a goal down to win 3 1 in Turin, and their last four results have been high scoring affairs. Against a Venezia side with no away points and a defence that leaks constantly, a 3 0 home win looks the most likely outcome. The Lariani have the firepower and Venezia simply do not have the defensive organisation to keep them at bay for 90 minutes.
Venezia are going to be under the cosh for most of this game and will likely commit a number of cynical fouls to disrupt Como’s rhythm. A team defending for long periods against a side with this much technical quality tends to accumulate bookings out of sheer desperation. Over 3.5 cards in the match looks a reasonable shout.
Tasos Douvikas is Como’s top scorer and with Moise Kean unavailable until December, the Greek striker is the man leading the line. He has been sharp in front of goal during this winning run and faces a Venezia defence that has been generous all season. Douvikas to score first looks like good value.
Como are averaging three goals per game during their winning run and Venezia concede more than two per game on average. Put those two things together and over 2.5 goals in this fixture looks like a near certainty. Over 3.5 is tempting given the form and the opposition, but over 2.5 is the safer call and should be backed with confidence.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Correct Score | Como 3 0 Venezia |
| First Goalscorer | Tasos Douvikas |
| Over 9.5 Corners | Yes |
A dominant Como win with Douvikas on the scoresheet and plenty of attacking pressure generating corners fits perfectly with how this game is likely to unfold.
Como have too much for Venezia in virtually every area of the pitch. Their attack is in devastating form, their defence has been tight, and they are playing with a belief that comes from knowing they belong at the top end of this division. Fabregas might rotate a little but even his second choices are technically superior to what Venezia can put out.
Venezia’s away record this season is a disaster and there is nothing in their performances on the road to suggest that changes here. Nicola is a smart operator but he needs time, bodies and a bit of luck to turn things around, and he is unlikely to get any of those things at Stadio Sinigaglia on Saturday lunchtime. Como 3 0 Venezia, and it could easily be more.
