Bodo/Glimt
LilleThere is a real contrast in narratives heading into this one. Bodo/Glimt are a side running on adrenaline right now, locked in a proper title scrap at the top of the Eliteserien and carrying the momentum of a dramatic 3-2 win over Viking FK into this European fixture. Kjetil Knutsen’s side are the kind of team that feed off atmosphere and intensity, and when the crowd is behind them at Aspmyra, they are a genuine handful for anyone. The problem is that their Champions League campaign has been patchy at best, and they know another defeat could effectively end any hope of cracking the top 24.
Lille arrive in Norway in a curious position. Davide Ancelotti has built a side that sits second in Ligue 1, which tells you everything about the quality he has assembled. But their continental form has been genuinely poor. No points from their opening league phase fixtures, defeats to Arsenal and Galatasaray, and a run of four games without a win before they edged past Lens at the weekend. They are not a bad team by any stretch, but they are a team that has not yet found their rhythm in this competition, and Bodo will be hoping to exploit that uncertainty.
This fixture takes place at Aspmyra Stadion in Bodo, Norway, with both clubs competing in the Champions League league phase. Bodo are desperate for a positive result on home soil to claw themselves up the standings, while Lille are chasing a first win in the competition this season to give their campaign some genuine direction.
Neither side is without their injury concerns, and the absences could have a real bearing on how both teams line up and perform. Here is the picture heading in:
For Bodo, Knutsen will likely lean on the players who delivered against Viking and keep faith with that energy. Patrick Berg and Sondre Fet are expected to fill the midfield gaps left by Evjen and Mikkelsen, and the striking partnership of Ole Didrik Blomberg and Andreas Helmersen gives Glimt a lively front two capable of making life difficult on the counter.
Predicted Bodo/Glimt XI: Haikin; Sjovold, Bjortuft, Gundersen, Bjorkan; Auklend, Fet, Berg, Hauge; Blomberg, Helmersen
Lille face real challenges in attack with Mbappe suspended, Igamane crocked and Ueda not ready. That means the 40 year old Olivier Giroud could lead the line, supported by Dilane Bakwa, Hakon Haraldsson and Soriba Diaoune in behind. At right back, teenager Maxima Goffi is expected to get the nod after the Santos injury.
Predicted Lille XI: Ozer; Goffi, Ngoy, Alexsandro, Perraud; Andre, Bentaleb; Bakwa, Haraldsson, Diaoune; Giroud
Bodo come into this off the back of a rollercoaster of a weekend. Their top of the table clash with Viking had everything. Two goals up, pegged back to 2-2, then Jens Hauge popping up to restore the lead and the side holding on to win 3-2. Both managers got their marching orders before the break, which tells you about the heat of that game. Crucially though, Knutsen’s side ground it out, and that is a marker of a team with real character. In the Champions League their record reads two defeats from three, including a 4-3 loss to Napoli which was a wild game but showed they can score against anyone at this level.
Lille’s recent form is a bit of a mixed bag depending on which competition you look at. In Ligue 1 they are flying, sitting second behind PSG and clearly a team of genuine quality domestically. But in Europe it has gone wrong at every turn. The 3-0 thumping at Arsenal was harsh but emphatic, and losing 4-2 to Galatasaray at home was a result that raised real questions about their defensive shape in the Champions League. The 1-0 win over Lens snapped a four game winless run, but one clean sheet victory over a mid table Ligue 1 side is not exactly a confidence explosion heading into a trip to northern Norway.
The pattern emerging for Lille in Europe is that they look vulnerable when pressed aggressively and struggle to impose themselves with the control they manage domestically. Bodo at home, under the lights, pressing with intensity, could be exactly the type of test that exposes those weaknesses again.
These two clubs do not have a long shared history, and this Champions League campaign represents a rare meeting between sides from very different footballing backgrounds. There is not a deep well of head to head data to draw from, which means the current form and context matters far more than historical precedent here. What we do know is that Bodo at home in European competition have shown they can be a real nuisance. They are not a side that parks the bus and hopes for a draw. They go at teams.
This is a fascinating fixture to assess. Bodo are in decent nick and have everything to play for at home, while Lille look like a team that has not worked out how to apply their domestic quality to the European stage yet. The hosts are energised, the visitors are short on strikers and short on continental confidence. That combination makes Bodo the more attractive side to back, but Lille have too much class throughout the squad to be written off entirely. The markets I like here are around goals and individual performers rather than a straight result call.
Given Bodo’s attacking intent, their 4-3 loss to Napoli still fresh in the memory, and Lille’s porous defending in European games this season, the goals line looks well worth targeting. Both sides need something from this game and will be pushing forward. Over 2.5 goals feels well supported.
Bodo press high and get forward in numbers, and Lille will be looking to work the ball wide with Bakwa and Diaoune on the flanks. An attacking game between two sides that like to get into dangerous areas should produce a healthy corner count. Over 9.5 corners looks a solid shout here.
Jens Hauge is the man to watch. He scored the winner against Viking at the weekend, he operates in that left of centre area where he can arrive late and get efforts on goal, and he will be full of confidence heading into this one. The platform being laid by Berg and Fet in central midfield should give Hauge license to get forward, and he looks a good price to open the scoring.
Both managers were sent off in the Viking game which tells you the temperature around this Bodo squad right now. European nights at Aspmyra carry their own intensity, and with so much riding on the result for both clubs, this is unlikely to be a feisty but polite affair. Over 3.5 cards is worth considering, particularly if Lille’s defence is being stretched and forced into cynical fouls to slow Bodo’s transitions.
Bodo have scored in every Champions League game this season regardless of the scoreline. Lille, even without their first choice strikers, have Giroud leading the line and enough creativity around him to create chances. Given Bodo’s goalkeeping situation and Lille’s quality in Ligue 1, both teams finding the net looks the most likely outcome. BTTS yes is the call.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| Over 2.5 Goals | Over 2.5 |
| First Goalscorer | Jens Hauge |
Hauge scoring in a free flowing game where both sides find the net fits perfectly with the evidence from both teams’ recent European outings.
Bodo will come out with energy and purpose, and the home crowd should give them a real lift in what is a crucial game for their Champions League ambitions. Lille are a good side but they have yet to figure out how to perform in this competition, and without Mbappe, Igamane and Ueda, their attacking threat is significantly reduced. Giroud will give them a presence up top but chasing the game in the cold of northern Norway at 40 years old is a tough ask.
The feeling here is that Bodo nick it in front of a passionate home crowd, with Hauge and the front two making life difficult enough to earn a narrow but deserved victory. Predicted score: Bodo/Glimt 2-1 Lille.
