CompetitionUEFA Champions League
Who do you think will win?

Paris Saint-Germain arrive in Spain having scored fourteen Champions League goals in just three matchdays. Fourteen. That is the same number Arsenal put up across three games back in 2010-11, which at the time felt almost unprecedented. What Luis Enrique has built at PSG right now is genuinely frightening, and they carry that firepower into a ground where Villarreal have been shipping goals at a rate that should have every defender at the club losing sleep.

El Submarino Amarillo have conceded in fourteen consecutive Champions League games. Not a rough patch. Not a wobble. Fourteen straight. They have been leaking an average of 3.8 goals per game across their last ten in this competition, and while Tuesday brings a chance to win back to back home Champions League games for the first time since 2008, everything about their defensive record screams vulnerability against a side hitting top gear at exactly the right moment.

Villarreal vs Paris Saint-Germain Match Details

This one takes place at Estadio de la Ceramica in eastern Spain, known to most football fans as El Madrigal, as part of the Champions League League Phase. Remarkably, despite both clubs having long histories in this competition, these two sides have never actually met before, making this a genuinely historic fixture. PSG come in as the reigning back to back Champions League holders, chasing a record that would see them become only the second club this century to win three in a row, after Real Madrid.

Team News

Both sides go into this with some notable absentees, though PSG’s injury list in particular reads like a who’s who of their best attacking talent. Villarreal have muscular concerns across their squad too, which does not help when they are already struggling defensively.

  • Villarreal doubts: Nathan Saliba, Alassane Diatta, Juan Foyth and Ilias Akhomach are all questionable with muscular issues
  • PSG: Ousmane Dembele is dealing with a hamstring strain and looks unlikely to feature
  • PSG: Marquinhos also has a hamstring problem, a big miss at the back
  • PSG: Nuno Mendes and Alessandro Longoni are both out with leg injuries
  • PSG: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is a long term absentee after suffering a cruciate ligament tear

Enrique is without some genuinely elite players here, but the depth PSG carry means this is an inconvenience rather than a crisis. Villarreal’s fitness concerns only add to the uncertainty around a back line that was already looking shaky.

Predicted Lineups

Inigo Perez looks set to go with a front line built around Santiago Mourino and Tani Oluwaseyi, the pair sharing the team lead with two Champions League goals each this campaign. Georges Mikautadze, the Georgian international striker, is expected to lead the attack, with Sam Buchanan and Samuel Moleiro providing the wide threat. Gulacsi will need a very good night between the sticks.

Villarreal expected eleven: Gulacsi; Mourino, Navarro, Veiga, Cardona; Comesana, Gueye; Oluwaseyi; Buchanan, Mikautadze, Moleiro

For PSG, Ferran Torres steps up as the main focal point with Dembele missing, which carries a nice narrative given Torres used to play for Valencia, one of Villarreal’s biggest regional rivals. Desire Doue has scored in back to back Champions League games and will be full of confidence on the left. Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha and Warren Zaire-Emery give Enrique real quality and control in the middle of the park.

PSG expected eleven: Safonov; Hakimi, Beraldo, Pacho, Hernandez; Zaire-Emery, Vitinha, Fernandez; Doue, Torres, Akliouche

Recent Form

PSG have been relentless. Six goals past Slovan Bratislava, then 4-2 against Manchester City, then 4-2 against Barcelona. Three games, fourteen goals, perfect record in the League Phase. They are now on a thirteen game unbeaten run in the Champions League, and on Monday Luis Enrique won his 127th competitive game in charge, which makes him the most successful manager in PSG’s history by that measure. A tenth straight win across all competitions is there for the taking here.

It is worth noting that PSG did start this season slowly in Ligue 1, going three games without a win, so there was a moment early on where people wondered if the title defence hangover was setting in. But in Europe they have looked a completely different animal. They have conceded only sparingly too, keeping the goals against tally very low across their recent away games in particular, shipping one goal or fewer in four of their last five competitive matches on the road.

Villarreal’s campaign has been a rollercoaster with the needle stuck pointing south. Four or more goals in each of their three Champions League games so far, but only one win to show for it, that comeback against Napoli at home. They went to Anfield and lost 4-3, which was entertaining for a neutral but catastrophic from a defensive standpoint. They sit nineteenth in the League Phase standings on three points, and the goals against column makes for grim reading. Their two recent competitive home draws have cost them dearly in terms of building momentum at El Madrigal.

Head-to-Head Record

There is no head to head history to lean on here, because these clubs have simply never faced each other before in any European competition. That in itself is slightly surprising given both have been regular Champions League fixtures over the years, but Tuesday night is genuinely uncharted territory for both sets of supporters.

What we can note is that Villarreal have a decent record against French opposition in Europe historically, going unbeaten in two previous Champions League meetings with Lille back in 2005 and 2006, winning one and drawing one. But PSG are operating at a different level to any French club Villarreal have encountered in Europe before, so that historical quirk offers very little comfort for the home side.

Key Stats

  • Villarreal have conceded in 14 consecutive Champions League games and averaged 3.8 goals against per match across their last 10 in the competition
  • PSG have scored 14 goals in just 3 Champions League matchdays and are on a 13 game unbeaten run in the competition
  • PSG have not lost a Champions League group stage match on Spanish soil since November 2015

Villarreal vs Paris Saint-Germain Betting Tips

The angle here is pretty clear when you strip it back. Villarreal cannot defend in this competition right now, and PSG, even with several key attackers missing, carry enough quality and confidence to punish them. The visitors are the standout selection on the night, and the markets around goals and attacking output look well worth exploring given the patterns both sides have shown.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Yes, both teams to score looks a solid call here. Villarreal have shown they can find the net, as their 4-3 scoreline at Anfield demonstrated, and PSG’s defence will have a couple of unfamiliar bodies in it given the injury situation. Villarreal scored three at Anfield and came back from behind against Napoli, so they are not toothless going forward. PSG will score, and the home side have enough up front to nick one of their own.

Corners Prediction

Over ten corners is the call. PSG dominate possession and push forward constantly, which tends to generate corners as teams drop deep to defend. Villarreal will also need to be proactive going the other way if they are to stay in the game, and their wide players like Buchanan and Moleiro tend to carry the ball into wide areas. This should be an active game in terms of set piece opportunities from out wide.

Cards Prediction

Over three cards feels right. Villarreal are going to be under serious pressure for long spells and their midfield will need to get physical to disrupt PSG’s rhythm. When a team is chasing the game against slick opposition, the bookings tend to follow. There is enough edge in this fixture, with European prestige on the line for both sides, to expect the referee to be busy with his card pocket.

Correct Score Prediction

Villarreal 1-3 PSG feels like the most likely outcome. The Yellow Submarine will grab one because they always seem to score regardless of how heavily they are outplayed, but PSG have too much quality and momentum to be kept out. Three goals for the visitors is entirely consistent with what they have produced in every Champions League outing so far this season.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
PSG To Win PSG Win
Over 3.5 Goals Over 3.5 Goals

All three legs point in the same direction when you look at Villarreal’s defensive record and PSG’s scoring form, making this a coherent combination rather than a speculative one.

Final Match Prediction

PSG win this, and they win it comfortably. Villarreal will make it interesting for a spell, they usually do, and they should nick a goal somewhere along the way given how freely they score even in games where they are second best. But conceding in fourteen consecutive Champions League games is a pattern too consistent to ignore, and PSG are the most ruthless team in Europe right now.

Luis Enrique’s side set a new club record for their longest Champions League unbeaten run with a result here, and another dominant away performance keeps the only remaining perfect record in the competition intact. Villarreal 1-3 PSG, and it could easily be more emphatic than that.
