New Zealand and India meet at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday 4th November for the first ODI of what promises to be a compelling five-match series. Having just come through a tight T20I series that India edged 3-2, both sides now switch to the fifty-over format where the dynamics shift considerably.
New Zealand will be desperate to turn things around after being on the wrong end of the T20 results. Mitchell Santner leads the side but the BlackCaps are already dealing with injury concerns, most notably the absence of Devon Conway who picked up a knock just before the series began. Fielding a settled XI is going to be a challenge for the hosts given the disruption around the squad.
India arrive in good nick. They recently put in a dominant ODI display against the West Indies, winning 3-0 at home, and the focus now turns to how Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli perform with the bat as preparations for the 2027 World Cup gather pace. The absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna from the bowling attack does thin things out up front, but India still carry plenty of firepower.
Eden Park is a ground that always generates conversation. The boundaries here are notoriously short and uneven, which naturally lends itself to big hitting and inflated totals. That said, the pitch on offer for this first ODI is a fresh one rather than the surface used during the T20Is, which should give the bowlers a bit more to work with. Seam movement and some early assistance for the quicks is possible, making the toss and the decision of when to bowl with the new ball quite significant. There is a slight chance of rain during the match but nothing that looks like it will seriously disrupt play.
India lead New Zealand convincingly in ODI head-to-head terms. Across 123 matches, India have won 63 compared to New Zealand’s 52, with seven no results and one tie. The first meeting between these sides dates back to June 1975, with New Zealand winning on that occasion. The most recent encounter was in January 2026 and that one also went New Zealand’s way, so the Kiwis will draw some confidence from recent form even if India hold the overall advantage.
New Zealand: Will Young, Henry Nicholls, Tom Latham (WK), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (C), Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy
India: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj
Shubman Gill is in the form of his life right now. The India captain was absolutely outstanding in the home ODI series against West Indies, accumulating 334 runs at an average of 167.00 including a double hundred. He is the kind of player who builds and then accelerates, and on a ground with short boundaries, once he is set the scoring rate tends to go through the roof. New Zealand will need to get him early.
Matt Henry is the man New Zealand will be looking to for early breakthroughs. He has a real record against Indian batters in white-ball cricket and his ability to move the ball both ways with a brand new cherry makes him dangerous in the first powerplay. With India missing their frontline pacers, New Zealand’s best chance of staying in this match may well depend on Henry setting the tone with the ball from the outset.
India are the stronger squad on paper and their recent ODI form has been excellent. New Zealand will fancy their chances at home and Eden Park gives their batters a fighting chance with those small boundaries, but the injury disruption is a real problem and India’s batting lineup is simply too deep. Gill and Kohli clicking together at this ground would be a tough combination for any attack to contain, and India’s spin options through Axar Patel add another dimension that New Zealand may struggle with in the middle overs.
