The final ATP Masters 1000 of the year is upon us, and Paris always delivers. The indoor hard courts at Bercy suit a specific type of player, and with the draw now underway, there are some genuinely interesting first round clashes to get stuck into on Day 2. Here is how I see the action playing out.
These two have split their previous meetings one apiece, so there is history here, but the current form picture tells a much clearer story. Etcheverry has been in freefall lately, carrying a six match losing streak into Paris and looking short on confidence every time he steps on court. The unforced errors have been piling up, and that is not a great sign heading into a Masters 1000 against someone who hits the ball as hard as Rublev.
Rublev is not the force he was when he was a fixture in the top ten, and his season has had its fair share of turbulence. But on indoor hard courts with his forehand firing, he remains a serious threat to anyone below the very top tier. Against an Etcheverry side who looks mentally fragile right now, Rublev should be able to impose himself early and not let up.
Fritz leads their head to head one win to none, and nothing about the current state of both players suggests that record is under any real threat. Bonzi has had a tough season, sliding down towards the fringes of the top 100, though his big serve and willingness to go for his shots on quicker surfaces do give him a puncher’s chance on a good day.
The problem for Bonzi is that Fritz essentially has the same weapons but at a considerably higher level. The American is an aggressive baseliner with a strong serve, and while he has not quite had the season to push him into the Turin eight, he will arrive in Paris motivated to finish the year on a high. Fritz should be too powerful and too consistent for Bonzi to handle here.
Tsitsipas leads their one previous meeting, but that head to head record feels like ancient history given how both players have evolved. Earlier in 2026, Tsitsipas looked like he might genuinely slip outside the top 100, which would have been unthinkable not long ago. He has steadied the ship and climbed back into the top 50, which at least shows some resilience, and his serve can be a real weapon on the quick Bercy surface.
That said, I think Tien is the more dangerous player right now. The young American has been improving steadily, and his left handed forehand is ideally suited to targeting the Tsitsipas backhand, which has long been the Greek’s softer side. Tien is the more consistent operator at this moment in time, and if he stays disciplined and keeps executing his game plan, the surface and the matchup both favour him.
