Rain wreaked havoc on the opening day of the WTA 250 in Chennai, meaning Tuesday carries a full slate of first round action with all 16 matches scheduled. Among the highlights is top seed Janice Tjen, the defending champion, as she begins her title defence against an American wildcard. Here are my picks for the day two matches.
These two have never crossed paths on tour before, so there is no head to head history to lean on. Garland has had a quiet 2026 by her own standards, appearing in just her second WTA Tour main draw of the entire season after featuring in eight last year. The Taipei number one has been spending most of her time on the WTA 125 circuit and has a title to defend at that level in January.
Teichmann, on the other hand, showed genuine quality when she reached the fourth round at Roland Garros earlier this season before a right leg injury disrupted her momentum. The Swiss lefty has not played a great deal since then, which is the only real question mark here. When fit and firing, her left handed game creates all sorts of problems for opponents who are not used to facing it, and Garland simply does not have enough WTA Tour experience this year to deal with it. Assuming Teichmann has her body right, this should be a routine enough victory, though Garland may push her in patches.
Prediction: Teichmann in 3
Selekhmeteva leads the head to head one win to nil from their only previous encounter. Kostovic is a 19 year old Serbian with real ambition and she is using tournaments like this one to try to bridge the gap between the ITF circuit and the WTA main tour. She did fall in the first round in Guangzhou last week against Maria Timofeeva, but she is adapting to this level and the Asian swing gives her relevant recent match play.
Selekhmeteva reached the top 75 at her peak this season but has been struggling badly of late. Early exits at WTA 125 events have done real damage to her ranking and confidence, and she has not played in Asia at all on this swing, which puts her at a disadvantage in terms of acclimatisation. Kostovic feels like the live underdog here. The head to head favours the Spaniard on paper but current form and freshness tip the balance the other way. This should go the distance.
Prediction: Kostovic in 3
No previous meetings between these two. Kudermetova will have had mixed emotions when Harriet Dart withdrew from this tournament after winning her first career title in Guangzhou last week. Dart in that kind of form would have been a genuinely tough draw, so Kudermetova can consider herself fortunate to face lucky loser Morvayova instead.
Kudermetova is chasing a seventh WTA Tour win of 2026 and has real motivation to make a deep run here. Morvayova has not won back to back matches since July and all of those wins have come on the ITF circuit at a lower level. The step up to a WTA 250 main draw against someone with Kudermetova’s experience looks a tough ask. Expect a fairly straightforward afternoon for the Russian.
Prediction: Kudermetova in 2
First time meeting on tour. Tjen comes into this as the top seed and defending champion in Chennai, which gives her obvious motivation to perform well on what has been a frustrating season overall. Her 16 wins and 28 losses in 2026 reflect a year that has not gone to plan, but she remains a consistent ball striker with solid groundstrokes that can wear down opponents at this level.
Hui is a former Stanford University player and the 2023 US Open girls champion, which tells you she has serious talent and a bright future ahead of her. However, ranked around 1067 in the world, stepping onto a WTA 250 court against the defending champion is a significant challenge. Tjen’s steadiness and experience should see her through without too many scares, and getting matches on the board early in this tournament will be important for her confidence going into the later rounds.
Prediction: Tjen in 2
