Day 2 at the ATP Paris Indoors brings the bulk of the first round to a close, but there are also a couple of second round matches slotted in for good measure. Ben Shelton, the top ranked American on the men’s tour, is among those stepping out onto court. Here is how I see the day playing out.
These two have not met before, so there is no head to head record to lean on. What we do have is a clear picture of two very different approaches to the game. Fery is an all court attacker who looks to take the ball early and dictate rallies, while Halys is more of a counterpuncher who waits for his moment and uses the crowd when he can. Playing at home in Paris gives Halys a significant emotional boost, and that matters on an indoor hard court where margins are tight.
Fery had a remarkable run to the Wimbledon semi-finals earlier this season, but he has struggled to carry that form into the autumn. He has not looked quite as sharp or as assured since that summer peak, and Halys is exactly the type of steady, disciplined opponent who can expose that inconsistency. I expect Halys to soak up pressure, keep the errors low, and let the crowd carry him through.
These two have split their previous meetings one apiece, so there is genuine parity heading in. Both are aggressive baseliners who like to attack from the back of the court, which means this is likely to be a high intensity, high risk affair decided by fine margins. When two players of similar profiles meet, physical freshness and mental sharpness often prove decisive.
The key context here is that Lehecka only finished his Basel campaign on Sunday, reaching the final before making the trip to Paris. That is a very short turnaround, and even for a fit young professional, carrying any accumulated fatigue into a match against a hungry, well rested opponent is a real disadvantage. Michelsen has had more time to recover and prepare, and in a match that could easily go three sets, that edge could prove crucial. I expect Lehecka to be competitive but to fade when it matters most.
The only previous meeting between these two left handers came back in 2022, when Norrie was at or near his peak and Shelton was still finding his feet on tour. Norrie won comfortably on that occasion, but the situation now is about as different as it could be. Shelton has become a genuine top five player, while Norrie has dropped well below the level he was operating at during his best years.
Shelton has admittedly been through a patchy stretch since the US Open, dropping matches he would typically be expected to win. But Paris should sharpen his focus. The ATP Finals in Turin are on the horizon and a strong showing here would give him real momentum heading into that week. Norrie is no pushover, and he is crafty enough to cause problems with his left handed serve and awkward angles. The key question is whether he can neutralise Shelton’s delivery, which at its best is nearly unplayable indoors. I do not think he can do it consistently enough over three sets.
Jodar leads this head to head one win to none, which adds an extra psychological dimension to a match that already has plenty going on. The Spaniard has had a quite extraordinary debut season on tour, breaking into the top ten and keeping himself firmly in contention for a spot at the Turin Finals. For a first year professional to be in that conversation is genuinely remarkable, and it speaks to just how complete his game already is.
Ruud has had a difficult year by his standards, hampered by injury and unable to string together the consistent results that took him to multiple Grand Slam finals in previous seasons. He came through his first round match in straight sets, which is a positive sign, but there is a real difference in trajectory between these two players right now. Jodar has an elite return game and produces clean, powerful groundstrokes from both sides. If he brings the level he showed in round one, Ruud is going to find it very hard to live with him.
