Getafe
Brighton & Hove AlbionThere is something genuinely intriguing about a Premier League side flying high in the title race being asked to pack their bags, head to Madrid, and do it all over again on a Thursday night in Europe. Brighton under Fabian Hurzeler have become one of the most watchable teams in English football right now, and this trip to Getafe in the UEFA Conference League gives us a chance to see whether that form is built on something real or whether rotation and a hostile Spanish atmosphere can expose a few cracks.
Getafe are no mugs either. The Deep Blue Ones are a La Liga outfit with genuine physicality and a European pedigree that stretches back further than their current standing in the Conference League table suggests. They were mixing it with Inter Milan in the Europa League knockout rounds not that long ago, and their own domestic form coming into this one is decent enough to make this a proper contest rather than a formality.
This Conference League league stage fixture takes place at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in Getafe, just south of Madrid. Both clubs are still finding their feet in this season’s competition, with Brighton sitting ninth in the overall table and Getafe down in 30th. Three points here would be significant for either side as they look to position themselves ahead of the knockout round places.
Both managers have injury concerns to deal with, and there will be notable changes from each side’s most recent domestic outings.
Jose Bordalas will make a clutch of changes from the side that beat Sevilla, bringing in Femenia at right back and handing Mayoral a start up front alongside Azon. Djene Dakonam slots into the engine room, and Davinchi gets the nod at left back. It is a recognisable Getafe shape, compact and hard to play through, with Garcia and Djene likely to set a physical tone in the middle of the park.
Hurzeler has rather more to juggle given the injury list, but there is still quality throughout his squad. Hinshelwood gets his chance in midfield, Rutter leads the line in the absence of Ferguson and Tzimas, and Matt O’Riley drops into a creative midfield role. Verbruggen keeps his place in goal, with Boscagli and Svobada forming the centre back partnership.
Brighton are in genuinely excellent nick right now. Third in the Premier League, genuine title contenders the table at least, and coming off the back of a 1-0 win over Manchester City that showed real defensive discipline and clinical finishing when it mattered. Hurzeler has this squad playing with structure and confidence, and the results are speaking for themselves. In the Conference League, they opened up with a 4-0 demolition of Kauno Zalgiris before a goalless draw with Jablonec kept them ticking over in the table.
Getafe have had a bumpier European ride. That 1-1 draw with Univ. Craiova on their Conference League debut was fine enough, but the 5-2 defeat to Lugano was a real eyeopener and raises questions about how solid they are when asked to defend properly against teams with pace and movement. Domestically though, they have shaken that off quickly. Back to back wins over Lebrijana in the Copa del Rey and then Sevilla in La Liga show a team that knows how to perform in their own backyard. That 3-1 win over Sevilla in particular suggests their forward players are in decent touch.
The pattern here is fairly clear. Brighton bring consistent quality across all competitions. Getafe are capable of big moments, particularly at home, but their European showings suggest they can be opened up when the opposition has real quality in behind. Both sides come into this one with momentum, which should make for an engaging 90 minutes.
These two clubs have never met before. This is a genuinely fresh matchup, so there is no head to head history to lean on, and no particular psychological edge for either side to draw from previous encounters. What we do know is that Getafe have not played European football since the 2019-20 Europa League campaign, where they reached the last 16 before going out to Inter Milan. Brighton, meanwhile, went out at the same stage of the Europa League in 2023-24, beaten by Roma. Both clubs know what it feels like to compete at this level and fall just short, which adds a layer of motivation for each.
Brighton look the stronger outfit on paper and are coming here with real momentum behind them. Getafe at home are always a threat and the Lugano result probably flatters the Swiss side slightly, but there are enough question marks about the Spanish club’s ability to keep things tight at the back for us to fancy the visitors to get on the scoresheet. The absence of several Brighton attackers tempers the expectation slightly, but the quality in Hurzeler’s squad runs deep enough that we still expect them to put this to bed.
Yes. Getafe showed against Sevilla that they can find the net when the conditions suit, and their home crowd will get behind them. Brighton’s defensive setup is solid but rotating personnel means a slightly unsettled back line. We expect both sides to contribute to the scoring here.
Getafe are well known for a physical, pressing style that tends to rack up the foul count, and a European night at the Coliseum tends to bring an edgy atmosphere that encourages the aggression. Brighton’s technical players will draw fouls in tight areas, and Djene in midfield is not exactly a shrinking violet. Back over 3.5 cards across the 90 minutes.
Brighton to win 1-2. Getafe will likely score through a set piece or a moment of pressure in the first half, but Brighton’s quality in the final third should earn them the points. It will be tight and probably not settled until late on.
Borja Mayoral is the standout pick here. The experienced Spanish striker knows how to perform on big occasions, he is in the starting XI, and he will be leading the line for Getafe against a Brighton side with a slightly unfamiliar back four. He is sharp, clever in the box, and will fancy himself against defenders who have not played together much recently.
Brighton tend to dominate possession and work the wide areas well, which naturally generates corner opportunities. Getafe will also look to win set pieces as a route into the game, particularly later on if they are chasing. Back over 9.5 corners across the full match.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| Correct Score | Getafe 1-2 Brighton |
| Total Corners | Over 9.5 |
These three picks complement each other well, with a close, back and forth game generating plenty of set piece situations and both teams finding the net in a narrow Brighton win.
Brighton are the class act in this fixture, and even with rotation and injury absences, there is enough quality throughout Hurzeler’s squad to get the job done in Spain. Getafe will make it tough, particularly in the first half when the home crowd is loud and their pressing game is at its most intense, but the Seagulls have shown all season that they know how to grind out results when it matters.
Getafe 1-2 Brighton is the call. The hosts will contribute to what should be a watchable European evening, but Brighton have too much quality and too much momentum to come away empty handed from this one.
