CompetitionUEFA Europa League
Who do you think will win?

There is something genuinely compelling about a game where one side turns up unbeaten in Europe and the other turns up with nothing on the board and everything to prove. Bayer Leverkusen have been quietly excellent in the Europa League this season while drawing far less attention than their Bundesliga wobbles deserve. Marseille, meanwhile, are a club that always carries noise and expectation but have been serially let down by their own away form. When those two realities collide at BayArena, you get a fixture that tells you a lot about where both clubs actually are, not where the hype says they should be.

Leverkusen have had a strange season domestically, but Europe has been a different story entirely. Marseille arrive having rediscovered something in Ligue 1, rattling off four straight wins, but their travelling record is a different conversation altogether. This one has the shape of a game that could go quite comfortably one way, but football rarely lets you off that easily.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Marseille Match Details

This Europa League league phase fixture takes place at BayArena in Leverkusen, with the hosts sitting second in the overall standings and Marseille propping up the bottom end of the table in 34th place. The gulf in European form between these two sides going into the game could hardly be more pronounced, which makes the context here as interesting as the football itself.

Team News

Leverkusen are carrying real problems in attack and the gaffer is going to have to get creative with his selection. Marseille have a couple of concerns too, though nothing quite as damaging as what Die Werkself are dealing with up front.

  • Eliesse Ben Seghir is ruled out for Leverkusen
  • Martin Terrier is unavailable through injury
  • Christian Kofane is sidelined
  • Moussa Diaby is out, leaving the attacking options seriously thin
  • Guela Doue remains on the treatment table at right back, with Jarell Quansah the natural cover
  • Marseille left back Emerson Palmieri picked up a knock against Toulouse but avoided serious damage, with Ulisses Garcia likely to step in as a precaution

Predicted Lineups

For Leverkusen, Carles Martinez looks set to line up with Flekken in goal, Quansah filling in at right back alongside Medina, Tapsoba and Gutierrez across the back four. Fernandez and Garcia should anchor the midfield, with Lucas Vazquez, Ibrahim Maza and Afonso Moreira operating in the spaces behind Patrik Schick up top. It is a makeshift attacking unit by their standards, but there is still quality there if Schick gets the service he needs.

Marseille look likely to set up with De Lange between the sticks, a back four of Weah, Egan-Riley, Aguerd and Garcia, and a midfield trio of Nnadi, Hojbjerg and Abdelli. Harit and Paixao should provide width with Amine Gouiri leading the line. Bruno Genesio will want his side to stay compact and make Leverkusen work, but whether they have the defensive discipline on the road to do that is another question entirely.

Recent Form

Leverkusen have been a study in contrasts this season. In Europe they have been sharp, winning all three of their Europa League games, scoring eight goals and keeping three clean sheets. That record includes a comfortable 2-0 win over OFI Crete in October. But in the Bundesliga things have been bumpier. A 4-2 home defeat to Stuttgart at the weekend ended what had been a fine run at BayArena, leaving them sixth in the table with 13 points from eight games. They did take care of business in the cup, beating Nurnberg 5-2 in the DFB-Pokal, so the confidence is not shattered, but there are clearly questions about their defensive consistency at the moment.

Marseille’s picture is more complicated. After a truly wretched opening to the season, five losses in their first six games left Genesio’s job hanging by a thread. But they have come through that storm, winning four of their last six in Ligue 1, scoring 13 goals in that run. The problem is they have conceded seven in that same stretch and kept just two clean sheets, so the defensive solidity is not quite there yet. More tellingly, their away form has been rotten for a prolonged period. They have lost seven of their last ten on the road and four of six away fixtures this season. That is not a blip, that is a pattern.

The contrast in European form tells the clearest story. Leverkusen with nine points from nine, Marseille with zero from nine. Whatever Marseille have been doing right at home in France, they have not been able to replicate it at all when travelling in this competition.

Head-to-Head Record

These two clubs do not meet regularly, and European football tends to produce fixture lists that keep familiar opponents apart for years at a stretch. What the history does not change is the structural advantage Leverkusen carry here as a physically imposing Bundesliga side operating in front of their own supporters in a stadium where they have been difficult to beat. Leverkusen won their first five home games of the season before the Stuttgart defeat, and even with that result factored in, BayArena has been a decent fortress overall. Marseille, as covered, have shown little ability to perform on their travels this term.

Key Stats

  • Leverkusen have won all three Europa League games this season, scoring eight and conceding zero
  • Marseille have lost seven of their last ten away fixtures across all competitions
  • Marseille scored 13 goals in six Ligue 1 games during their recent run but conceded seven, suggesting defensive fragility

Bayer Leverkusen vs Marseille Betting Tips

The angle here is fairly clear. Leverkusen are a wounded side domestically but a well-oiled machine in Europe, and they face opponents who cannot buy a result away from home. Even with the attacking injuries, the hosts have enough to get the job done, and Marseille’s defensive record on the road gives you little reason to trust them to hold firm. This shapes up as a Leverkusen win, likely with a clean sheet attached, and the market should reflect that nicely across a few different angles.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Under 2.5 goals is the call here. Leverkusen have kept three clean sheets in Europe this season and are dealing with attacking injuries, while Marseille have struggled to create consistently on the road. This feels like a controlled, professional Leverkusen win rather than a goal fest.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

No on BTTS. Leverkusen have not conceded once in three Europa League outings, and Marseille’s away attacking output has been poor. Unless the visitors get a stroke of fortune, a Leverkusen clean sheet looks the more likely outcome than both sides finding the net.

Cards Prediction

Over 3.5 cards looks reasonable. Marseille will need to be physically combative to disrupt a Leverkusen side that likes to control proceedings, and with Hojbjerg in midfield alongside two other physical presences, the middle of the park could get feisty. European nights at BayArena tend to have a bit of edge to them, and referee caution is not guaranteed when tempers rise.

Corners Prediction

Over 8.5 corners is appealing. Leverkusen are a team that dominates possession and attacks from wide areas, and when they are chasing the game or trying to unlock a defensive block they tend to pile on the pressure. With Marseille likely sitting deep to try to protect a result, expect plenty of deliveries into the box and corners stacking up across both halves.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Match Result Bayer Leverkusen to Win
Both Teams To Score No
Total Corners Over 8.5

A dominant Leverkusen win, a Marseille side too blunt away from home to threaten the goal, and plenty of corners as the hosts press for more goals makes for a coherent and well-supported combination.

Final Match Prediction

Leverkusen have too much going for them in this competition to slip up here, even with half their attack on the treatment table. They know how to win in Europe, they are at home, and they are facing a side who have been genuinely poor on their travels all season. Marseille’s recent Ligue 1 form is a positive sign for Genesio, but four wins at home is a very different story to three wins away from it.

Schick leads the line, Maza and Vazquez create enough between them, and Marseille end the night with nothing again. Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 Marseille.
