DC United
New York City FCDC United have made this a season to forget. Five straight defeats heading into the final day, just seven wins all campaign, and a goals tally that tells you everything about how toothless they have been without Tai Baribo carrying the attack. This is a club that knows it has underperformed badly, and there is no hiding from that now. New York City arrive at Audi Field in their own state of frustration, having blown what looked like a solid position in the playoff race through a string of late collapses that became almost comically predictable. Twelve goals conceded between the 75th minute and full time across the season is not bad luck. That is a mental failing, and Pascal Jansen will know it.
So here we are. Two clubs that should have done better, playing out the final game of their MLS regular seasons with nothing but pride on the line. That can produce flat, lifeless football, or it can produce something surprisingly open and competitive. Given the way both sides play, and given that DC have the edge in recent head to heads, this feels like a game that will have a bit of needle to it despite the circumstances.
This Eastern Conference regular season finale takes place at Audi Field in Washington DC, with both clubs finishing the 2026 MLS campaign outside the playoff positions. The occasion carries little in terms of standings implications, but for DC United it is a chance to avoid ending the season on a sixth consecutive defeat, while NYCFC are chasing a final day victory to give Jansen something to point to as he heads into what could be a difficult off season review.
Both squads arrive at this one with notable absences, and DC United have arguably the more significant injury headache given that their top scorer is among those ruled out.
Rene Weiler has very little room to manoeuvre given the injury list, and without Baribo the burden falls on Peglow and Ordaz to provide something up top. Bono keeps his place in goal, with Kurokawa, Nealis, Bartlett and Hefti likely forming the back line. Stroud and Dozzell should anchor midfield, with Peltola and Nono providing the width and creativity.
Jansen has a similarly patched up squad to work with. Freese starts in goal. The back four should be Gray, Martins, Sands and O’Toole. Shore and Perea sit in the middle, with Ojeda, Fernandez and Traore supporting Magno through the centre of the pitch. It is not the most fearsome NYCFC lineup you will ever see, but there is enough quality there to hurt a DC side that has looked vulnerable all season.
DC United’s form is nothing short of alarming. Five consecutive defeats, 14 losses from 33 matches overall, and only seven wins across the entire campaign. The 3-0 defeat to Columbus Crew on the previous matchday was their latest setback, and there is very little to suggest Weiler has found any answers going into this one. With only 39 goals scored across the whole season, they have been desperately short of a cutting edge, and that problem is only compounded now that Baribo is out of the picture for this finale.
NYCFC’s collapse since returning from Leagues Cup duty has been one of the more baffling stories of the Eastern Conference season. Two wins from 15 games is play off contention form in reverse, and the manner of some of those dropped points has been excruciating. Against Montreal they looked on course for three crucial points before a 91st minute equaliser from Daniel Rios killed their hopes. That inability to manage games in the final quarter of an hour has been the defining theme of their second half to the season.
Neither side is in good form, but NYCFC at least have the motivation of potentially giving Jansen something to build a case for his future on. DC’s slide looks deeply entrenched at this point, and even on home turf it is hard to see where the energy comes from to break out of it.
DC United have been the stronger side in recent meetings between these two clubs, and that is a factor worth respecting regardless of their current form. They have won the last two encounters between the sides, including one at Audi Field, and Jansen’s record in direct managerial clashes against DC is poor, with two defeats from two. That psychological edge matters even if the form book says otherwise.
NYCFC’s record in season finales is also worth flagging. They have lost each of their last two final day fixtures, including one against this very opponent. Final day football can expose teams whose motivation has already drained away, and there is a real question about whether Jansen’s squad can produce the kind of focused, driven performance their recent record has not exactly suggested they are capable of.
This is a tricky one to call with any great confidence given the state of both sides, but the angle I keep coming back to is NYCFC having just enough quality to edge it. DC’s slide looks too deep and too long to be reversed on the final day, especially without Baribo. The visitors have attackers who can create and finish, and a DC back line that has been all over the place should offer them something to work with.
I am going with 1-2 to New York City. DC will likely nick something given NYCFC’s defensive fragility in the closing stages, but Jansen’s side have enough to take the three points through a goal or two of their own before hanging on nervously at the end.
Yes, both teams to score. DC will find a way to get on the board even without Baribo, because NYCFC have conceded in practically every game this season regardless of the scoreline. And NYCFC have attackers capable of hurting a DC defence that has shipped goals freely all year.
Expect a few bookings in this one. Final day games with nothing on the line can go one of two ways, and when pride is the only thing being played for the tackles tend to fly in. Both squads have shown disciplinary inconsistency across the season, and with tensions running high after difficult campaigns for both clubs, over three and a half cards feels like a reasonable call.
Andres Perea is my pick here. The Colombian midfielder has been one of NYCFC’s more reliable contributors when it comes to arriving in dangerous areas, and he already found the net in their last outing against Montreal before Rios broke their hearts. With NYCFC likely to come at DC early and with intent, Perea driving through the middle could well open the scoring.
Over 2.5 goals. Neither side is equipped to grind out a low scoring game right now, and both have defensive problems that are not going to fix themselves on the final matchday of the season. Three or more goals feels almost certain given the evidence of the whole campaign.
Over 9.5 corners. NYCFC like to work the ball into wide areas and deliver from out wide, and DC United when chasing the game tend to invite pressure. With DC potentially going long and direct without their main striker, expect plenty of aerial contests and balls that go behind, keeping the corner count ticking over throughout.
| Market | Selection |
|---|---|
| Both Teams To Score | Yes |
| Over 2.5 Goals | Over |
| First Goalscorer | Andres Perea |
Both teams scoring and a high goals total go hand in hand given what we know about both defences, and Perea as first scorer at a decent price adds real value to a combination that fits the profile of this game well.
DC United’s season has been one long, grinding disappointment, and there is very little in their recent form to suggest they can halt the slide even at Audi Field. Five straight defeats, a squad decimated by injuries including the absence of their one genuine goal threat, and a gaffer who is running out of time to prove himself. NYCFC arrive in poor shape of their own making, but they have players across the pitch who are individually superior to what DC can put out on Saturday night.
Jansen needs a win here more than Weiler does in terms of pure job security optics, and that extra bit of desperation might just be enough to tip the balance. I am calling it 1-2 to New York City FC, with DC grabbing a consolation but ultimately finishing an ugly campaign with another defeat.
