The 2026 WTA Finals are up and running at Indian Wells, and the opening day serves up two matches that could set the tone for the entire round robin. Marta Kostyuk comes in as an alternate after Elena Rybakina pulled out through injury, drawing a tricky first assignment against Linda Noskova. Then Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula face each other in a blockbuster all American contest. Both matches carry real weight from the off. Here is how I see them playing out.
Kostyuk gets her shot at the season ending championships through the back door, but she will need to be at her very best from the first ball. Noskova arrives in Indian Wells riding the wave of a genuinely brilliant 2026 season. She won Wimbledon and made the quarterfinals at the US Open, and she has beaten Kostyuk in their two most recent meetings, including a hard fought three set win at Flushing Meadows back in September. Noskova leads their head to head at two wins to one and has clearly figured out how to handle the Ukrainian on a big stage.
Kostyuk is never easy to beat. Her movement is excellent and she is aggressive from the baseline, capable of dragging opponents out of their comfort zone when she is switched on. The concern here is that she has had limited match time since the US Open, whereas Noskova is sharp and in form. The Czech has the game and the recent experience in this specific matchup to handle whatever Kostyuk throws at her. Kostyuk will make it competitive in spells, but the momentum and the head to head record both point the same way.
Few rivalries on the WTA Tour feel as genuinely even as this one. Gauff and Pegula are locked at five wins apiece in their head to head, they know each other inside out from countless hours on court together as doubles partners, and neither one is in the habit of giving the other a free ride. Pegula got the better of Gauff at last year’s WTA Finals, so there is a score to settle as far as Coco is concerned. That said, 2026 has very much been Gauff’s year in this matchup. She beat Pegula at Wimbledon and again in the Cincinnati final, winning both encounters convincingly enough to suggest a genuine shift in momentum.
Gauff’s greatest weapon in this contest is her ability to defend brilliantly and then flip the point on its head in an instant. Pegula is one of the cleanest ball strikers on tour and her consistency can grind opponents down over long rallies, so the tactical chess match between these two is always worth watching closely. If Pegula can keep the ball deep and stop Gauff from dictating, she absolutely has the game to win this. But Gauff has beaten her twice already this year and carries real confidence going in. These two will push each other to a third set, but Gauff’s current form edge should prove the difference.
