The WTA 250 in Chennai has reached its conclusion after a demanding week of tennis on the Asian swing, and the final is a genuinely intriguing one. Top seed Janice Tjen will face third seed Magda Linette with the title on the line, and with this event also marking the end of the Asian swing for 2026, there is plenty riding on the occasion beyond just the trophy itself.
These two have not met before, so there is no head to head record to lean on, which makes the tactical matchup all the more fascinating to unpick. Tjen is a baseliner with genuine craft and cleverness in her game. Her heavy backhand slice is central to everything she does, disrupting opponents’ rhythm and pulling them out of their comfort zone. She has been excellent throughout the week, conceding just one set on her way to the final, which speaks to how well she has managed her matches.
Linette operates quite differently. She is a classic counterpuncher, content to absorb pace from the baseline and redirect with precision. The Pole does not impose herself on points so much as she waits for openings, and that patient approach has carried her through the draw without too much drama. The question is whether that defensive mindset will hold up against someone as varied and unpredictable as Tjen.
The key battleground will be the baseline, as you would expect from two players who both prefer to operate from deep. Linette will want to keep things linear and steady, turning it into a war of attrition where she can work angles and redirect. Tjen, though, will be looking to mix things up constantly, pulling Linette forward with her slice and changing the pace at every opportunity. On the evidence of this week, Tjen has looked the sharper and more confident player, and if she maintains that level in the final she should have enough to get over the line in what figures to be a close contest.
