The WTA Hong Kong Open wraps up with a final that genuinely has me interested. Claire Liu and Alexandra Eala have both played well enough to deserve their shot at the title, but they have arrived here via very different routes. Liu has been utterly immaculate all week, while Eala has had to dig deep on more than one occasion. Both have plenty riding on this one.
These two have met once before, back in the first round of the 2025 Guangzhou Open, where Liu came from a set down to win 2-6 6-4 6-4. That result will give Liu a degree of confidence going in, though Eala will rightly feel she is a different player now compared to that encounter. The head to head sits at 1-0 in Liu’s favour, but that number tells you very little about where both players are right now.
Liu’s week has been nothing short of exceptional. Four main draw matches, zero sets dropped, and some genuinely impressive scalps along the way. Getting past Katie Boulter without losing a set is not something you do by accident. Boulter can be brutally aggressive from the back of the court, and Liu handled her with the kind of movement and tactical patience that suggests she is hitting a real purple patch. She constructs points intelligently, keeps herself in exchanges longer than most opponents would like, and rarely gives you an easy entry into the rally. If she brings that level today, she will be a serious problem for anyone.
Eala has had to work considerably harder to get here. Beating Maria Sakkari in three sets to reach the final shows real quality and mental strength, and her performances against Tereza Valentova and Antonia Ruzic were far from straightforward either. The Filipino plays with real intent from the baseline, pressing forward and looking to take time away from opponents whenever the opportunity presents itself. When her forehand is working and she can set the terms of a rally, she is genuinely difficult to stop. The concern for Liu is that if Eala gets on top early and starts dictating, it can become very hard to wrestle control back.
The tactical battle here is fascinating. Liu will want to extend rallies and take pace off the ball to prevent Eala from teeing up her biggest shots. Eala will want to shorten points and force Liu into positions where she has to generate her own pace rather than redirect it. If Liu becomes too passive and simply retrieves, she risks handing Eala exactly the tempo she wants. But if Liu pushes too far forward without the right opportunities, she could find herself in uncomfortable positions against a player who transitions from defence to attack with real sharpness. Eala’s ability to control proceedings and the experience she has built across a breakthrough season in 2026 tips this for me.
