The Ebor Festival is one of the biggest horse racing events in the UK, held annually at York Racecourse in late August or early September. The Ebor Festival dates back to the early 19th century. The festival takes its name from the Ebor Handicap, which was first run in 1843 and is still one of the most prestigious races in Britain.
Some of the most notable moments of the Ebor Festival include the famous victory of Frankel, when debuting at the Ebor festival in the 2012 Juddmonte International, along with Enable winning the 2019 Yorkshire Oaks. The Ebor Festival features several notable races that attract some of the top horses, jockeys, and trainers.
As mentioned earlier, the Ebor Handicap is the race that gave the festival its name and it remains one of the most prestigious races in the UK. The race is open to horses aged three years and older and is run over a distance of one mile, five furlongs, and 188 yards (2,787 meters). It is a handicap race and has a purse of £245,945 with the winner receiving £150,000.
The Nunthorpe Stakes is a Group 1 race run over a distance of five furlongs (1,000 meters). It is open to horses aged two years and is one of the biggest sprint races in horse racing. The race is named after Nunthorpe, a suburb of York, and has been run at the Ebor Festival since 1922. The prize money for the Nunthorpe Stakes is currently over £500,000.
The Yorkshire Oaks is a Group 1 race run over a distance of one mile, three furlongs and 188 yards (2,385 meters). It is open to fillies and mares aged three years and older and is one of the most important races in the calendar for female horses. The race was established in 1849 and the winner currently receives over £300,000 of the £500k+ purse.
The Juddmonte International Stakes is a Group 1 race run over a distance of one mile, two furlongs, and 56 yards (2,063 meters). It is open to horses aged three years and older and is currently sponsored by Juddmonte Farms, one of the most successful breeding operations in the world. The race has a prize fund of £1 Million.
The Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes is a Group 1 race run over a distance of five furlongs (1,000 meters). It is open to horses aged two years and older and is one of the highlights of the festival. The race is sponsored by Coolmore Stud, another thoroughbred breeding operation, and has a purse of over £500,000.
