The FedEx Cup Playoffs get underway this week as the top 70 players in the standings head to TPC Southwind for the FedEx St Jude Championship. The pressure rises from here, with only the top 50 moving on to the BMW Championship and the season getting shorter for anyone who slips up. Hideki Matsuyama gave us an each-way return with a tied seventh finish last week, and our golf tipster is back with three more selections at 10/1, 22/1 and 28/1.
There has been a PGA Tour event in Memphis since the late 1950s and TPC Southwind has been the regular home since 1989. The tournament has changed names and status several times over the years, but it remains one of the more recognisable stops on the schedule and now carries even more weight as the opening event of the Playoffs.
TPC Southwind is a par 70 measuring 7,288 yards and it has never been a course where players can simply overpower their way around. Water comes into play on 10 holes, there are nine doglegs and the smaller Bermuda greens can be tricky to hit from the wrong positions. It is a layout that rewards control, patience and solid ball striking from start to finish.
The course has also been tightened up over the years. Trees and bunkers were added, fairways were narrowed and more than 200 yards were added before further renovation work ahead of last year’s event. The greens were rebuilt with TifEagle Bermudagrass, several were reshaped and a handful of holes were lengthened, making an already demanding test even tougher.
Greens in Regulation has historically been one of the strongest indicators of success here. Most winners over the last decade have ranked near the top of the field in that category, with Hideki Matsuyama fourth for GIR when he won in 2024 and several recent leaders also performing strongly with their irons.
Par four scoring is another stat worth paying close attention to. Eleven of the last 13 winners at TPC Southwind have ranked inside the top four for Par 4 Scoring, while the leading contenders year after year tend to separate themselves on those holes. That makes sense on a par 70 where the par fours make up such a large part of the test.
Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green is another useful measure. Recent champions have almost always ranked near the top of the field in that area, underlining just how important all-round ball striking is. Players do not necessarily need to be long or perfectly straight, but they do need to be consistently good from tee to green.
Course form has also become more important in recent years. Justin Rose had shown flashes of strong form here before winning last season, Matsuyama had already played well at Southwind before his 2024 success and Lucas Glover finished third the year before he lifted the trophy. Familiarity with the course certainly seems to help, although there have been enough debut winners over the years to stop that becoming a hard rule.
The Sony Open is one event that tends to provide useful clues. Matsuyama, Justin Thomas and several other Southwind winners have also performed well at Waialae, with both courses rewarding accurate approach play and tidy putting on Bermuda surfaces.
There is also a strong case for looking beyond the very shortest prices. Justin Rose won here last year at a big price, while Lucas Glover and Abraham Ancer were also far from obvious winners when they got the job done. TPC Southwind has a long history of producing experienced winners and the odd surprise result, especially when players arrive in form at the right time.
The Playoff format adds another layer this week. With only the top 50 progressing, even players sitting comfortably inside the top 70 still have plenty to play for. A bad week can end a season, while one big result can secure another start and put someone right in the mix for East Lake.
Being close to the pace has usually been the safest route to victory. Many recent winners have been inside the top five from early in the week and stayed there, with Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama and Lucas Glover all prominent throughout their winning runs. Southwind can punish mistakes quickly, so falling too far behind is usually difficult to recover from.
That said, this course has still produced some dramatic comebacks. Will Zalatoris was well off the pace after round one before going on to win in 2022, while Justin Thomas recovered from seven shots back at halfway in 2020. A slow start is not always fatal, but history still favours players who put themselves in position early.
TPC Southwind has also produced plenty of final-round drama. Leaders have traded at very short prices and still been reeled in, while the course’s water hazards and demanding closing holes can turn a comfortable advantage into a nervous finish in a hurry. That makes this one of the more interesting Playoff events to follow in-running.
