A cracking result again last week with Tommy Fleetwood landing the each way money at 20/1. The focus now shifts to Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania for the US PGA Championship, where our tipster has four each way selections ranging from 10/1 right through to 55/1.
The US PGA often feels like the most open of the four majors and this year looks no different. Aronimink makes its long awaited return as host venue, and although we have only seen it sparingly over the years, there is enough course history to build a solid picture of the type of player likely to contend.
This is a classic Donald Ross design and a proper championship layout. It is set up as a par 70 measuring just under 7,400 yards, and while it is not the longest course the players will face all season, it still asks plenty of questions from tee to green.
The fairways are generous enough in places, so length off the tee should still be a major advantage. Past events here have shown that players who can drive it long and attack with shorter irons tend to create the most opportunities. That said, this is far from a simple bombers track.
Approach play will be absolutely vital. Ross courses usually place a huge emphasis on finding the correct sections of greens, and Aronimink is no different. Players who consistently hit quality iron shots and give themselves realistic birdie looks should separate from the pack over four rounds.
The short game also looks a huge factor this week. Looking back at previous events held here, scrambling numbers stand out time and time again. Even during lower scoring renewals, the players near the top of the leaderboard were regularly saving par from difficult spots and keeping momentum going.
Putting always matters in majors, but it could be especially important here. The greens at Aronimink have plenty of subtle movement and players who get comfortable early on the surfaces could gain a massive edge. A hot putter has often been the difference between contending and simply hanging around in this championship.
Recent form heading into the US PGA has also been a strong guide historically. Many winners had already lifted a trophy earlier in the season or arrived after a string of high finishes.
Course correlations are also worth noting. Form at other Donald Ross venues tends to carry over nicely, especially Sedgefield and East Lake, while Sawgrass has also produced plenty of crossover names over the years. Players comfortable on strategic layouts that reward strong iron play should feel at home here.
From an in play perspective, this is not a venue where players are completely out of it after a slow opening round. Previous winners at Aronimink have come from several shots back early on and there is definitely scope for movement across the leaderboard over the first two days.
Once players get into position over the weekend though, experience tends to matter. Major championships rarely become a free for all on Sunday afternoon and handling the pressure coming down the stretch will be every bit as important as pure ball striking.
The field is stacked as always, with the world’s best all arriving in strong form, and that should give us a leaderboard packed with quality heading into the final round. Conditions are expected to be fair across the week which could allow the scoring to push lower than many expect, especially if the course stays receptive.
All things considered, this looks like a US PGA that should suit confident players arriving with strong recent form, sharp iron play and the patience to grind through the difficult stretches when momentum starts to shift.
