Chester Racecourse, also known as the Roodee which means ‘The Island of the Cross’, has a place in the Guinness World Records as the oldest racecourse in operation having been established in 1539.
The racecourse is independently owned by Chester Race Company Ltd which also runs the Bangor-on-Dee course.
In 2012, the course became the first racecourse in Britain to introduce their own betting service, ChesterBET, which replaced Tote on the site. The region was also the first to record a prize given to the winner of a horse race which was awarded at a Chester fair back in 1512 some 27 years before the racecourse opened.
The racecourse is 1 mile and 1 furlong around and is considered to be the smallest course of significance in the country.
It’s a left-handed circular track that as a run-in just shy of 2 furlongs. With a straight of just 239 yards, long-strided horses tend to find this course more challenging.

The Chester Cup is the highlight and takes place on day 3 of the festival. Originally called the Tradesmen’s Cup when the race was established in 1824 and then later as the Tradesmen’s Plate, it was renamed the Chester Trades’ Cup in 1874 and became known simply as the Chester Cup. It is now run over a distance of 2 miles, 2 furlongs and 147 yards having previously been slightly shorter.
