Built on the site of a former open-cast coal mine in the Gwendraeth Valley, the track opened in 2009 as the first new National Hunt course in Britain for 80 years.

It's a wide, flat, galloping oval that trainers often compare to Newbury, and it races all year round. There's Flat racing in the summer and jumps racing from autumn to spring, with the leading Welsh yards well represented at almost every meeting.

Ffos Las Racing Tips

If you're looking for Ffos Las racing tips for today, here are some general tips to keep in mind for the track:

• Back genuine gallopers: The track is a flat, wide, left-handed oval with a long straight, so there are few excuses. Horses that stay well and keep galloping are favoured over sharp, tight-track types.
• Respect the going extremes: Ffos Las can be very quick in high summer and extremely testing in midwinter. Proven form on the day's ground matters more here than at many tracks.
• Watch for the middle-of-the-track route: On soft ground, jockeys tend to race up the middle rather than on the rails in the straight. Horses that race prominently and handle the ground can take advantage.
• Follow the Welsh jumps yards: Evan Williams has had the most chase winners over the last three years, and Olly Murphy (29%) leads over hurdles. Jamie Snowden and Kerry Lee strike at over 40% from smaller numbers of hurdlers.
• Back Sean Bowen over jumps: Sean Bowen is the leading jumps jockey, with a 31% strike rate in chases and 23% over hurdles. Ben Jones also rides plenty of winners.
• Note Billy Loughnane on the Flat: Billy Loughnane leads the Flat riders at almost 30%, and Oisin Murphy and Rossa Ryan both have strike rates above 30%. Ralph Beckett, George Boughey and Ian Williams are the trainers to note.

Ffos Las Race Track Guide

The Ffos Las race track is a left-handed oval of about a mile and a half. It's wide and almost completely flat, with only a very slight rise down the back straight and the opposite in the home straight. Riders describe it as a fair, galloping test, and it's often compared to Newbury.

Flat Course

On the Flat, the home straight is extended so that five- and six-furlong races are run on a straight course. Races over longer distances use the oval, with one long sweeping bend into the straight.

Jumps Course

The jumps course has a home straight of just over four furlongs, with short run-ins over both hurdles and fences. Mick Fitzgerald describes the fences as a fair test, "not too stiff, but no pushover". Field sizes tend to be small, so tactics and pace can be decisive.

Draw and Going at Ffos Las

There's no significant draw bias at Ffos Las. Jason Weaver has said he hasn't seen any notable bias by draw or position across the track, and the track's width gives runners room to find racing space. On soft ground, the field tends to come up the middle of the straight rather than on the rail.

Because the course sits above a former coal mine, the ground can be very fast in summer and very testing in winter. In the jumps season, a soft or heavy card is very hard work, so look for proven mudlarks. Summer heat can also cause problems. The 24 June 2026 meeting was called off for that reason.

Big Races at Ffos Las

The late January jumps meeting has traditionally been the highlight of the year. It features the West Wales National, a handicap chase of about three and a half miles, and the Welsh Champion Hurdle. Past winners of the Welsh Champion Hurdle include Oscar Whiskey, Medinas and Saphir Du Rheu.

The best horse to run at Ffos Las is Sprinter Sacre, who won a novices' hurdle by 10 lengths under Barry Geraghty in February 2011 before going on to become a champion two-mile chaser. On the Flat, the summer evening cards attract runners from big yards such as Ralph Beckett, William Haggas and Juddmonte.

History of Ffos Las Racecourse

Ffos Las, which means "blue ditch" in Welsh, takes its name from the farm that once stood on the site. The land was an open-cast coal mine before local businessman Dai Walters led the £20 million project to turn it into a racecourse.

The first meeting was an evening jumps card on 18 June 2009, in front of a sell-out crowd of 10,000. Sir Peter O'Sullevan officially opened the course that August.

The first Flat race followed in July 2009, and the course has since been dual purpose. Arena Racing Company bought Ffos Las in 2018, and it now runs the course alongside Chepstow and other venues. The grandstand is named after the Welsh rugby player Jonathan Davies, who has local ties.

Over jumps in the last three years, Evan Williams leads the chase trainers with 9 winners, and Olly Murphy leads over hurdles with 13 winners from 45 runners (29%). Sean Bowen leads the jumps jockeys, with 11 chase winners at 31% and 19 hurdle winners at 23%.

On the Flat, the leading trainers are:

• Bernard Llewellyn: 13 winners, the most of any Flat trainer.
• Rod Millman: 11 winners at 18%.
• Ian Williams: 7 winners from 15 runners (47%).
• George Boughey: 6 winners at 40%.

Billy Loughnane leads the Flat jockeys with 14 winners at 30%, ahead of David Probert (12) and Rossa Ryan (11).

Visiting Ffos Las Racecourse

From the east, leave the M4 at junction 48 and take the A4138 towards Llanelli, then follow the brown signs. From the west, take the A40 to Carmarthen, then the A484. Car parking is free, and there's plenty of it.

The nearest stations are Kidwelly and Pembrey & Burry Port, both about 4.5 miles away, and Llanelli, about 6 miles away. A free raceday bus runs from Llanelli station on a first-come, first-served basis, and the 197 bus between Llanelli and Carmarthen stops nearby. Book a taxi home in advance.

General admission is £16 in advance for most meetings, and under-18s go free with an adult. Ladies Day in August and the Christmas Raceday are the busiest days of the year.
