Haydock Park Tips

Haydock Park Racecourse is located in Merseyside, nestled directly between Liverpool and Manchester. It is an award-winning course having been awarded the Racecourse of the Year in 1998 and 2000 and hosts both flat and National Hunt racing  throughout the year.

Around 30 race meetings take place at the 20,000 capacity venue which is set in a scenic area of parkland and woods.

Haydock Park Flat Course

Haydock’s track is around 1 mile and 5 furlongs in distance, oval-shaped and left-handed. There is a slight incline on the 4 furlong home straight which can be used for sprints of up to 6 furlongs when the straight chute/extension is utilised.

Haydock Park Jumps Course

The Haydock jumps course can be quite testing in the winter and fences are known to be rather stiff. Again, the course is flat and left-handed.

Haydock Park Feature Races

Around 30 race meets take place at Haydock each year from January through to December and there are many notable races that take place annually.

The Grand National Trial takes place in February and features twenty-two fences to be jumped over a distance of 3 miles, 4 furlongs and 97 yards. The race was established in 1947 and serves as a major trial for the Grand National.

The Betfair Chase is another important race at Haydock that takes place in November of each year. It is part of the Betfair Million Bonus which was won by Kauto Star in 2006 after winning the King George Chase and Gold Cup.

The Lancashire Oaks takes place in early July and is open to fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is a Group 2 flat race that is run over a distance of 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 175 yards.

The Sprint Cup is a Group 1 flat race and run over 6 furlongs. It is scheduled for September each year at Haydock Park.

• Left-handed, fairly flat, separate jumps course
• Group 1 Sprint Cup over 6f in September the highlight. Also many valuable handicaps and Group races.
• Low draw preferable over 7f as the bend comes up quickly
• Michael Dods 17/107 for 16% and a healthy LSP in recent years.
• Charles Hills boasts a 20% strike-rate (16/80) here in recent seasons
• Hugo Palmer with a 24.5% strike-rate (16/65) in recent years. Just 3/25 since moving to the NW however. 
• Adam Kirby 12/58 for 20.69% strike-rate in recent years.
• Jack Mitchell 12/50 in recent seasons.
• Callum Rodriguez is 7/52 for a 13% strike-rate in recent years. Includes two 16/1 winners.

Jumps Course Advice

• Left-handed, fairly flat, big stiff fences replaced with portable ones in the last 20 years. 
• Grade 1 Betfair Chase in November the feature. Also plenty of other Graded contests.
• Jamie Snowden 9/25 for a 36% strike-rate in recent years
• Phil Kirby with a 16.67% strike-rate (5/30 plus 14 places) showing a healthy profit in recent years with a 25/1, 8/1 and 13/2 winner plus places at 18/1, 20/1 and 33/1.
