Newcastle Race Course Guide

Newcastle's Flat course is a left-handed Tapeta oval, with a floodlit straight mile. The all-weather track opened in May 2016, replacing the old Flat turf course. The ground falls away towards the first bend on the round course.

The jumps course is left-handed and galloping, with a steady rise from the home turn to the finish. It stays on turf, and jumps racing runs from autumn to spring.

Draw and Going at Newcastle

On the straight course, there's no strong draw bias, but the position of the pace can make a big difference in big fields. On the round course, a good early position helps horses avoid going wide on the long bends.

The Tapeta track usually rides as standard, so Flat meetings rarely suffer from the weather. Over jumps, the turf going is usually good to soft or soft in winter.

The Northumberland Plate

The Northumberland Plate, a two-mile handicap, is the most famous race at Newcastle. It was first run on the Town Moor in 1833 and moved to Gosforth Park in 1882.

In 2026, Align The Stars won the Plate at 10/1 for Charlie Johnston and Daniel Muscutt. The three-day festival also features the Chipchase Stakes and the Northumberland Vase.

Ladies Day and Other Big Days

Ladies Day on Saturday 25 July 2026 drew more than 19,000 racegoers, the biggest crowd in over a decade. Premier and hospitality tickets sold out, and N-Trance and Bongo's Bingo performed after racing.

All-Weather Championships Finals Day on Good Friday is one of the richest all-weather meetings of the year. The Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle, one of Britain's top two-mile hurdles, is run in late November or early December.

Newcastle also hosts a student racenight and themed fixtures such as Bark in the Park.

History of Newcastle Racecourse

Racing in the North East dates back more than 350 years, starting at Killingworth in the early 17th century. George II instituted the King's Plate at Newcastle in 1753.

The present course at Gosforth Park opened in 1882. Arena Racing Company has run it since 2012, and the Tapeta all-weather track was installed in 2016.
