We have reached Day 4 at the WTA 250 in Chennai and the tournament is starting to take shape nicely. The Asian swing has been genuinely compelling viewing this year and Chennai is following the pattern, with players pushing hard to finish the season with some momentum behind them heading into the new year. Four matches to get through today, so let us break them all down.
These two have not met before so there is no head to head record to lean on. Hontama got here with a solid win over the fifth seed in her first match, which was an encouraging result and suggests she is hitting the ball well right now. Kulambayeva’s route has been a more unusual one. She came in as a lucky loser and then beat the very player who had knocked her out in qualifying, which is a lovely piece of symmetry if nothing else. For a player ranked outside the top 450 in the world, she is clearly playing without fear and hitting freely from the baseline.
The problem for Kulambayeva is that playing without pressure only takes you so far when the opponent across the net is as solid and experienced as Hontama. The Japanese player is a genuine counterpuncher who can absorb pace and redirect it, and that style tends to expose players who rely on hitting big without a Plan B. Kulambayeva has had a wonderful little run but this feels like the natural end of it.
Another first time meeting between two players who both prefer to settle into rallies from the back of the court. Waltert likes to load up with heavy topspin and use it to push opponents around, which can be effective at disrupting rhythm. Stefanini however is a baseliner who thrives on slower surfaces and clay court conditions suit her naturally, so she is in her element here in Chennai.
What also matters here is how each player came through their opening round. Stefanini got through in straight sets, which means she is fresh and carrying some confidence into this match. Waltert had a tighter opener and may be carrying a bit more fatigue and mental energy expenditure into this contest. On a surface that suits the Italian and with the physical edge likely in her favour, Stefanini should come through this one, though Waltert will make her work for it.
Adkar received a wildcard into the main draw and absolutely made the most of it in round one, coming from a set down to win in front of her home crowd in what was by all accounts the performance of her career so far. The Chennai crowd will be fully behind her again and that energy is a real factor. You cannot underestimate what it means for a young player to have that kind of support pushing her forward.
That said, Zarkhova represents a significant step up in class and the Russian plays an aggressive brand of baseline tennis that is designed to take time away from opponents and not allow them to settle. Adkar’s win was brilliant but the level she will face today is considerably higher. The home crowd will keep things interesting but Zarkhova’s aggression and experience should prove too much.
Linette leads the head to head by three wins to one, so on paper she has the psychological edge over the Japanese player. Both of them are very much in the same mould as baseliners who rely on retrieving, redirecting and frustrating opponents into errors rather than blasting winners. When these two styles meet, matches tend to come down to who is in better nick mentally and physically on the day.
Right now that feels like Uchijima. Linette has not been playing with much conviction or confidence in recent weeks and it has shown in her results. Uchijima on the other hand was dominant in her opening round and looked sharp and assured throughout. If she brings that same level of performance into this match, the head to head count matters a lot less than current form, and the form book points towards the Japanese player.
