Racing has been held on almost the same track beside the River Dee since 1859, and the course is unusual in having no grandstand. Racegoers watch from a grassy bank above the track, with picnics, gazebos and dogs all welcome in the Open Course.
It's a sharp, left-handed jumps track that rewards horses that travel well and jump accurately. Denman, Amberleigh House and Iris's Gift have all raced here.

If you're looking for Bangor-on-Dee racing tips for today, here are some general tips to keep in mind for the track:
The Bangor-on-Dee race course is a left-handed, fairly sharp circuit with only minor undulations, and Mick Fitzgerald describes it as generally downhill all the way round.
Horses are almost always on the turn, with three sharp bends. It stages jumps racing only, over hurdles and fences and in bumpers. Since 2006, local hunts have also held point-to-point races on a right-handed course inside the main track.
Bangor-on-Dee is the only racecourse in Britain without a grandstand. Racegoers watch from a sloping grass bank above the track, and there's a big screen on the Open Course. The accessible viewing area is in front of the stewards' tower. There's very little cover, so it's worth checking the Bangor-on-Dee weather forecast before you go.
On such a sharp track, position and pace matter. Horses that race prominently and travel strongly can control the race round the tight bends, while those held up need a clear run on the short home straight.
The going is usually good or good to soft in spring and autumn, but the low-lying riverside ground can become heavy in midwinter.
Meetings have been lost to waterlogging and flooding in the past, including during Storm Debi in 2023, and the February 2026 fixture was abandoned. The course has recently completed track improvements as part of a three-year investment programme.
Ladies Day at Bangor-on-Dee is held in May, on 23 May in 2026, and it's one of the busiest days of the year, with fashion, music and a full card of jumps racing.
The course also has a busy calendar of family days, including the Easter Egg Chase Day in spring and the Spooktacular Family Day at Halloween, when children's activities are free. Children aged 17 and under get in free at every meeting, and the Christmas Jumper Day in December is a popular way to start the festive season.
The first race meeting at Bangor-on-Dee was in February 1859, and racing has been held here regularly ever since, apart from during the two World Wars. The course has used almost the same track throughout.
It's one of three racecourses in Wales, alongside Chepstow and Ffos Las, and it's owned by the Chester Race Company, which also runs Chester. Some of the best-known jumpers of the modern era have raced here, including Gold Cup winner Denman, Grand National winner Amberleigh House and Stayers' Hurdle winner Iris's Gift.
Here are the leading trainers at Bangor-on-Dee over the last three years:
Brian Hughes has the most hurdle winners among jockeys, with 12, while Harry Skelton has 11 from 33 rides and Sam Twiston-Davies 10 from 30. Toby Wynne leads the chase jockeys with 9 winners.
Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse is at Bangor-Is-Y-Coed, Wrexham LL13 0DA, about 25 minutes from Chester and signposted from the A483. From the south and the Midlands, take the M54 and the A41 to Whitchurch, then the A525 towards Wrexham. Parking is free.
The nearest station is Wrexham General, and a free bus runs from the station on race days. Under-18s go free with an adult, and Open Course tickets for the late-2026 fixtures start at £7. There's no dress code in the public enclosures, so dress for the weather, although denim and trainers aren't allowed in the restaurants. Picnics, alcohol, barbecues and gazebos are allowed on the Open Course, and dogs on leads are welcome there.
