If you're looking for Market Rasen tips for today's races, here are some general tips to keep in mind for the track:
Market Rasen Racecourse sits on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and is one of the most scenic small jumps tracks in Britain. It is owned and run by The Jockey Club and hosts National Hunt racing only, with hurdles, chases and bumpers on the card throughout the year.
Market Rasen race course is a right-handed oval with a circumference of about a mile and a quarter. It's mainly flat with only minor undulations, and the tight bends make it much more of a test of speed and handiness than of stamina.
The home straight is longer than the size of the track might suggest. Horses that kick for home off the turn still have a fair way to go, so jockeys need to get the timing right. The fences are fairly straightforward, which is why the track is often used to introduce young horses to jumping.
There are no starting stalls in jump racing, so the draw doesn't apply at Market Rasen. Instead, track position matters a great deal. Horses that race prominently and hold a good spot on the inside around the sharp bends usually do better than those held up at the back, especially in bigger handicap fields.
The going at Market Rasen changes with the seasons. In summer and early autumn, the clerk of the course waters the track to keep the ground safe, and it usually rides good or good to soft. In the depths of winter, the ground can turn soft and become much more testing, which brings stamina more into play than usual.
Market Rasen is not a track for Grade 1 racing, but it does host several valuable handicaps that attract runners from the leading jumps yards:
Racing around Market Rasen goes back to the early 1800s, but the current racecourse on Legsby Road staged its first meeting in April 1924. It has since grown from a modest country track into one of the best-supported small courses in the country, and it has been run by The Jockey Club for many years.
Several top-class horses have passed through Market Rasen on their way to the top, including Altior, Synchronised, Don't Push It and dual Grand National winner Tiger Roll. Sir AP McCoy enjoyed great success at the track as well, winning about 27% of the races he rode in here.
Market Rasen Racecourse is located at Legsby Road, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, LN8 3EA. It's well signposted off the A631 on the east side of the town, and there is free parking in the public car parks. Market Rasen railway station is about a mile away, with trains connecting via Lincoln, Doncaster and Barnetby.
Tickets can be bought through The Jockey Club website, starting from £10 for most County Racedays when booked in advance. Under-18s go free.
There's no formal dress code at Market Rasen races, so you can dress however you feel comfortable, although bringing layers and an umbrella is a good idea as much of the course is uncovered. Picnics are welcome, and the bars and food outlets are card-only.
The racecourse is also known for its live music nights after racing. Sir Tom Jones returned to Market Rasen in August 2025, ten years after his first show there, and drew a crowd of more than 10,000.
