Arsenal are one of English football’s most successful clubs, with 13 league titles and a well-established reputation in English and European football. Since the departure of long-time manager Arsène Wenger in 2018, the club has been trying to re-establish itself at the very top.
The current stint under Mikel Arteta has brought moments of progress and excitement, but recent results have raised questions about the long-term direction of the team.
As pressure grows, attention turns to who could be next in line to lead the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta took over as Arsenal head coach in December 2019, replacing Unai Emery. Initially brought in as a former player familiar with the club, Arteta oversaw an immediate improvement in performances and led the team to FA Cup success in 2020.
Despite that early silverware, the club has struggled with consistency in the seasons that followed. While Arteta has guided Arsenal to Champions League qualification and periods of strong league form, failure to convert promising league positions into titles has created frustration among fans.
Arsenal finished 2nd in the Premier League in the 2024/25 season. 10 points adrift of title winners Liverpool. A disappointing exit from the Champions League and a lack of cutting edge in big games added to the scrutiny surrounding Arteta’s future heading into the new season.
Although no official announcement has been made, speculation is growing that a change could be on the horizon at the club, and bookies are currently taking bets on who will become the next manager of Arsenal.
The Arsenal board have remained publicly supportive of Mikel Arteta, but with the club falling short of expectations in key competitions, a managerial change is not out of the question.
Several names have already been linked with the role should it become available. Among the leading contenders is Simone Inzaghi, currently managing Inter Milan. With success in Serie A, he’s earned praise for turning Inter into a consistent force in both domestic and European competitions.
Former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri is another name gaining traction. With multiple Serie A titles to his name and experience at the top level, he’s seen as someone who could bring results quickly.
Antonio Conte is also in the frame. Although his last stint in North London with Spurs ended abruptly, his proven track record of delivering league titles wherever he goes keeps him in the conversation.
Diego Simeone often gets mentioned as a candidate whenever a major club job opens up. While he’s currently deeply rooted to Atlético Madrid, his results-driven approach makes him an attractive option to top clubs.
Other potential options include Andoni Iraola, who has impressed in the Premier League, as well as Mikel Arteta’s predecessor, Unai Emery, now managing Aston Villa.
Further down the list are Xavi Hernández, Marco Silva, and Zinedine Zidane, each offering differing levels of experience. There’s also interest in younger or less obvious options like Kieran McKenna, Cesc Fàbregas, and even club legend Patrick Vieira, all of whom have varying degrees of coaching success and ties to the club.
