Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League in 2004 and it took them 16 years to return after stints in both the Championship and League One. They had a positive season upon their return to the top-flight, finishing the 2020/21 season in the top half of the table. However, Leeds narrowly avoided the drop the following year and are once again fighting for survival in the current season.
The club has seen several managerial changes throughout the years with their latest appointment being in February 2022.
Current Leeds Manager
Javi Gracia is a Spanish football manager who is currently the manager of Leeds United. He was born on May 1, 1970, in Pamplona, Spain.
Gracia began his playing career as a defensive midfielder for several lower division clubs in Spain. He retired from playing in 2004 and moved into coaching. He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Villarreal and later became the head coach of several clubs, including Cadiz, Almeria, Osasuna, Malaga, Rubin Kazan, Watford and Valencia.
Gracia had a successful spell at Watford, where he led the club to an 11th place finish in the Premier League in the 2018-19 season and also took them to their first FA Cup final in 35 years, where they lost to Manchester City. However, he was dismissed by the club in September 2019 following a poor start to the 2019-20 season.
In July 2021, Gracia was appointed as the head coach of Valencia CF, where he had the task of rebuilding the team and leading them back to success in the Spanish top-flight.
Less than a year after joining Valencia, Gracia replaced Jesse Marsch as manager of Leeds United and won his first game in charge with a 1-0 victory at home to Southampton.
Who Will Be the Next Leeds Manager?
It’s still early days for Javi Gracia at Elland Road and his fate at the club could very well be determined by Leeds’ position in the table come the end of the season.
With Leeds far from safety, Gracia could very well be replaced should he not achieve results throughout the remainder or the current season.
If Gracia was to be sacked, there are several managers who could be in line to replace the Spaniard.
